Al, I've always got on well with my bosses. Perhaps I've been lucky, as none of them have been arseholes, but one of them once described me as a 'master of dissent'. I took this as a compliment in terms of my ability to stand my ground when I felt it necessary without seriously pissing them off. A combination of making them happy while not being a doormat seems to have worked, but this does require an element of reason on their part.

      Diplomacy is important, I believe.

Uhmn, what does Wells Fargo expect from witnesses of robberies against them ?
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Al, perhaps you'd be happier in a situation where you were your own boss. There's a lot more risk that way, but you seem ready to accept a lot of risk. You have an entertaining way of creating dialogue with people online ... internet marketing may be something you'd do well at.

I'm a bit confused about your problem. You work for a company that obviously want people to do their duty when it comes to crime, so just say that it is what you are doing. If they complain, find a better company to work for.

Edit: you could of course also ask your union to look at it - they ususally have some heavy lawyers that can fix the problem.

Yeah, he should like, do something more meaningful, like, run around as a grunt for the marines

Uhmn, US is the country of the free, so he can just find another place to work. If that is the marines or another private company doesn't matter - he can do whatever he wants

This is America, what are the chances he has a union?

Well, if he's so stupid that he isn't a member of a union, then I suggest that he sues the company privately

Unions are fading in power and influence over here, and have been for a while. I've read (The Economist, as usual) that it's because unions, formed in an era of massed, low-skill labor, are becoming increasingly irrelevant to a modern specialized workplace. Unquestioning defense of workers made sense back when a worker was just a guy who put two parts on cars all day; now, they tend to shield incompetents, and to favor seniority over talent or work ethic. But that's just what I've read; I've had no firsthand experience with unions myself.

Unions are terrible creations of greedy people.

I'm not a fan of unions, but damn you set yourself up.
