Wait, can't he kill the cop and then shock his boss with the story of how the cop he talked to was brutally murdered? That would make killing his boss redundant. But if he does kill his boss, maybe he'll get promoted to fill the gap.

I second that. With all the "Al, you dumbass, stop messing up your life" we give him, it's only fair to acknowledge that this time he did something genuinely admirable, even if it still wasn't the best for his career.

Do these things take that long?
          Yep, they sure can.

          They got my testimony
Ok, good. Then you don't have to worry about this until you get the summons to appear before the court.

they arrested the guy whom I positively identified
Ben, I think your situation was more complicated.
Yes and no. I reported the plate. The Wendy's restaurant that filmed the assault on me, and their employee (who was pulled through the order window), called the cops and reported both assaults.

It wasn't till a couple months later that I was out getting some business done at lunch when the cop pulled me off the street and said that she was happy that she finally found me. Took me into the station to take my statement.

From what she told me, they had taken the plate and caught the guy, based on plate + description of the vehicle the next day. Arrested him for both assaults. Tracked down the first victim and talked with her and took her statement. I'm guessing that she talked to the Wendy's restaurant (as they know me fairly well), and got a description.

Trouble for them is that they didn't have my name (which I should have given them), or my address. So they had no way of contacting and getting ahold of me, other then to go about their day and keep an eye out. I'm still not sure how the cop lucked out on me that day as I am rarely downtown, and was only there to get stuff done that I do rather infrequently.

Anyways, about a year later, the cop dropped in and said that the dude pled out to assault and accepted the plea bargain and that was it. She's a very nice cop, turned out to be a good customer for my store.

I said this is a more serious situation than some petty Wells Fargo stuff

It's a microcosm of who I am and why I want to be a Marine. It's sad how many people witnessed this (it's a busy intersection with stores all over), and I was the only one to do anything, including call the cops, let alone putting my neck out to pursue the guy. I guess most people are pussies.

To be fair, look at what your heroism has gotten you.

What? It is. I was the witness to a robbery plus an assault and battery. I'm the reason the guy is in a holding cell now. It is more important.

It doesn't matter if it is. That's not something you say.

You tell them you have a legal and moral obligation to make a statement. You certainly do not berate the job or its tasks.

Whatever. Same thing. These little nuances are BS.

Nice work on the heroism, Al, and good luck with handling the situation with your employers, where hopefully you haven't already taken things beyond diplomatic repair.

Good job AlB. Most people would not have done anything. Which, unfortunately, is what your manager expected you to do.

                                few pointers:

                                - this thing can take years. courts are slow. sorry.
                                - if you are hit with disciplinary action, you can do either of two things.

1, some small punishment, like a note on your record. best response is just to accept it and not to make any fuzz. i know, it sucks, but pragmatically it´s better. life sucks sometimes.

2, something big. i don´t know about US legislation in this sense, but on mainland Europe the law would work like this. you have a contractual obligation to WF to do your job. at the same time, given the circumstances, you have a duty as a citizen to help society at large, in this case this woman. most people wouldn´t, and by law they can get away with it, unless when *by their specific in-action* the situation became worse. any duties you have to WF would be superseded temporarily by your actions based on moral duty. so, if they fire you, you have a good case for a court, as it´s injust.

of course, there´s a difference between being right and getting what you deserve. legal action is long, slow, painful, expensive, etc.

also, i think your manager sucks. but don´t tell her that.
