I see. So your 'corporate master' is a kiddie fiddling, tax dodging bunch of wankers.

    • Gribbler, stop trying to defend unions by arguing with Ben. You're basically arguing against a strawman because only Ben is stupid enough to make such arguments against unions. Fact is, in terms of unions sucking, ben is actually right just for (generally) the wrong reasons.

Been my own boss for much longer than I've worked in a union (which is zero).

Worked in many different places over the years.

            Right to work laws

Unions have been driving jobs to Virginia to years. I hope they never repeal the union laws in Washington and Wisconsin and Ohio. I like it here, I'd hate to move.
Oddly enough they don't appear to be driving jobs to other "right-to-work" states like Nevada, Mississippi, and Florida that have high unemployment rates. What exactly is your evidence that Virginia is successful because of a lack of unions?

            Comment

            • Mississippi sort of goes without saying, because Mississippi sucks. Florida has a huge retirement community that was hit hard by declining stock prices, and Nevada has high unionization and has the most unions of any right-to-work state (and I hear that their right-to-work stuff is a bit dodgy but I'm not sure).

Don't even try to deny that unions drive away jobs and send businesses into bankruptcy, it's as obvious as gravity.

              • In other words, employers can't agree to not hire non-union workers. I haven't twisted anything.
Christ, that's what? A triple negative?

Employers can always refuse to hire anyone for any reason.

Right to work says that they are permitted to hire non-union workers for any position. Hope that's clear.

Why are you calling Thoth a thug? Just because he supports unions?
Because Thoth thinks it's ok to assault people who cross the picket lines.

If the employees form a union, the employer needs to negotiate with the union.
When negotiating with the employees who have chosen to be part of the union, yes. When hiring new people? Absolutely not.

private sector unions are a rarity now, which is baloney.
At 12 percent of the sector, they are a rarity.

Because of a clause in a contract to buy labor from a group of collectively bargaining workers that the employer voluntarily agreed to.
Which in a right to work state, the employees can't do. They can bargain collectively, just can't set up closed shops.

Of course once they make that agreement, they wouldn't mind if the state government enacted legislation that freed them from upholding their part of the bargain.
I don't see how the union has the right to take other workers rights away from them.

So they already have the right to not hire non-union members
In non-right to work (slave) states? No. They can't hire them in closed shops.

but agreeing not to as part of a contract made with a union should be forbidden?
Absolutely. Unions should be about protecting worker's rights to bargain, not stripping them away.

It really isn't, not when the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, etc. richest states in terms of GDP per capita do not have "right-to-work" laws. It would not be in the interest of a union to bankrupt a business.

                  • I like unions because it reminds me of the movie "Newsies". While going back to a time before unions does seem nice too, mostly because most of the good songs and playful chicanery in "Newsies" happened before they had a union, part of me wonders if it's really worth having the kids being thrown into prison for being charismatic and singing "Santa Fe". I would hope that HC could avoid such a fate, although there were no twins in the movies "Newsies" so it seems we've progressed past that point in our history..

Scum who take work away from honest people in the name of corporate profit are fair game.

If you cross a picket line that I'm on, you can count on me to put a boot in.

                            • I don't see how you're "taking work away" from anyone. You explicitly chose to stop working so you could force a company to pay you more than market wages. Nothing unreasonable at all about someone else filling in that demand. Don't like your pay? Find a new job. Can't find a new job with higher pay? Stop pretending you're worth more than you are.
