1. He hasn't said anything about Mexicans or trash in his backyard in this thread
2. Mexican isn't even a race.
He started a thread just to tell us this, and here he posts that if you're illiterate, you must be either black or muslim. Yet nobody here calls him out as a racist, which is interesting.

While Felch states it in a more crass way than I would, the main thrust of his point is totally correct. Detroit sucks because of Detroit. You can't say that the poor people in detroit are poor because they've been neglected or because the government hasn't given them the opportunity to succeed. On the contrary, they've been given more than everyone in America except probably Native Americans and Detroit is still a ****hole. Could it be--perhaps--that government assistance doesn't actually help?
There's a culture of reliance and dependence in Detroit, along with a strong anti-intellectual, anti-educational counterculture among the youth and no amount of government subsidy is going to fix that. In fact, I think it makes it worse.
Holy ****!

I'm sorry, you think they don't get preposterous amounts of welfare, bailouts and other bacon? I'd like to hear you explain that.
I don't understand, Guy. Have you not read the thread or the news? The GM bailout? The fact that half of Detroiters are on welfare? The size of medicaid rolls there? Rent-controlled apartments, public housing, and every other redistributive program in existence?

The GM bailout having ****-all to do with Detroit residents.

Guy, I'm not complaining about the fact that I don't get goodies. I think that you are deliberately misreading my posts...
I'm saying that despite these goodies, these people are still poor. So there's plenty of evidence that it isn't working.
And for god's sake, the GM bailout had everything to do with detroit, or more specifically, labor unions. It was a political favor for big labor, much of which is in Detroit.

Would you, right this second, exchange your life for the life of a Native American? Or an African American, or a Latino American?
Christ on a crutch, nothing is funnier than white people crying about being white.
Would the vast majority of members of any of these groups trade their lives for those of the vast majority of people in the world? If not, why do you think that redistributive programs should be targeted at those with the levels of material comfort they enjoy?
I also agree that Guy is misunderstanding what HC literally wrote. However, I think that HC is being disingenuous if he claims his posts weren't tinged with the sort of white outrage that Guy is making fun of.
It's not really white outrage, I wouldn't mind tax money going to these programs if they actually worked, I just am convinced that they're actively harmful and it ticks me off to see good money getting spent on things that keep people poor.

I don't know if redistributive programs are worthwhile or not. I simply find the ideas that Native Americans are given far too much utterly laughable, considering how much power generational wealth has in this country, and how our history made damned sure they have zero such wealth. I also find the idea that the GM bailout was somehow beneficial to the population of Detroit proper equally laughable.

Incredibly overstated. Most of the white people in the US who are rich (let's say top 5% of income - both earned and unearned - about 160k p.a. measured as a family) today in the US have as their ancestors people who were poor as **** a hundred years ago. Only at the truly top of the scale are you going to find a significant number of people who inherited vast sums of money from their parents.
What are you at, Guy? around the 95th percentile? What were your parents at? What about their parents?
I'm getting close to the 99th percentile. My parents are/were around 70th-80th or so. Their parents were 40th percentile (at best).
There are a lot of things you can blame the current poverty of Native Americans and American blacks relative to American whites on. "Generational wealth" is certainly not one of them. I'm much more willing to lay it at the feet of non-officially sanctioned racism than that.

Uhh... he claimed arab immigrants tend to have trouble with the english language (sense, you know, they grew up speaking arabic) and that illiteracy is unusually common among the poor and black people. Nice try though.
