This is so bad that the condo tower I lived in in Toronto had no 4s for floors...or 13.

    You had floors 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, PH1, PH2, PH3, PH5

    • So, your point is that if someone can earn the average wage (~40k) and has twice the average number of kids
I'm saying that public school is actually disadvantageous to the state and to families for families over 2 kids. Remember, you have to take into account the time that is spent by parents to get their kids to and from school. This is one of the reasons they teach population control, because if people had large families, they would not want to send their kids to public school, because it would actually cost them more than it would for them to stay at home and look after their kids. There's also the marginal costs associated with the second job as well that have to be considered.

the savings to taxpayers from homeschooling full time equal the benefit that would come from getting a job instead? In other words, for most people public schooling requires less resources than homeschooling their kids.
At present, yes, but 2.5 is not greatly over the halfway mark which means that a substantial proportion of the population has standard education as a net cost.

By the way, quantitative easing is done by the Federal Reserve, which is run by Bernanke, a Bush appointee, not Obama. I'm not aware of a QE3.
Right, which operates independently of Obama.

First of all, public schools offer free transportation. They call it a school bus. Second, I went to a public school and was never taught that small families are preferable to larger families, so I have no idea what you're referring to when you claim they teach "population control". I don't think there is any conspiracy, in fact public schools were implemented at a time when larger families were the norm, so obviously it seemed like a good idea to people with large families.

Huh? I don't know what '2.5' is supposed to mean or where you're getting it.

Right, which operates independently of Obama.
What evidence do you have that quantitative easing was Obama's idea? The first one started before Obama was even in office.

I'm astonished that the Chinese can be superstitious about the number 4, and also very good at math. It must be a struggle for them.

You should have picked an address of 88, since 8 is lucky.

I'll bump that thread with updates when they're available. Construction won't start for at least a month. The mortgage stuff is being finalized, then they need 2-8 weeks to draft the blueprints.

I will be visiting the site weekly and taking photographs of the progress for a future time-lapse as well.

                    • If you're going to do a time-lapse, make sure you take pictures daily during the exterior roughing phase, since it goes from nothing to up so quickly.

You do realize that there are other factors in buying a home besides nearby schools, right? Asher is getting a house, and I seriously doubt he gives a **** what the schools in his area are like.

It's not unheard of for rich asian parents to buy or rent houses in the area just so they can register their kid to attend the school.

                        1. A Good School System

We know, this answer is like saying a blue sky makes a good neighbor, but the National Association of Realtors' Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers notes that the percentage of buyers seeking quality schools (25%) ranks behind only those seeking a shorter commute (49%), nearby family (39%) and affordable homes (44%).

When even one child enters the equation, however, price (43%) and local relatives (34%) take a back seat to quality of schools (48%) and proximity to said schools (43%). Both real estate agents and homebuyers are well aware of this, and that's where the premiums come in. A joint study by UCLA and Dartmouth College in 2004 found a 10% swing in home values between houses in school districts where mean test scores are within the lowest quarter of the country's average test scores and a home where students average scores are among the top 25%.

It's more expensive, but no one says you have to stay there forever. In fact, in many towns across the country with great school districts, high school graduation day and moving day tend to coincide.

Still, the number of schools dramatically changing their performance in the league tables over a period of ~ 8 years is observed to be very small compared to the total number of schools.
Mike, the deluge of data which is published includes a lot more than exam results. Specifically, there are CVA scores (Context Value Added) which take into account the scores on intake and compare these with results. These CVA scores (which I used to scrape off the govt website and put into a schools db for recruitment purposes) are often considered more important within education than something like the Ofsted report when considering the performance of a school.
