If there was even such a mere correlation, Republicans wouldn't ever win elections, given the relative population of rich vs. poor.

Why would you think that the majority of poor people would vote Democrat? Their biggest constituency are the folks like John Kerry, lots of wealth.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

Well, I suppose we could add some more parties, then have 40% of the electorate win elections and boss everyone else around.Originally posted by Thoth View PostThat only applies if there is a difference between the two parties.
Demopublicans and Republicrats look pretty much the same from up here.

Wouldn't that be better determined by the fraction going to sports/etc?
I would be willing to bet that my poor rural school had a higher fraction going to sports than 'good' school districts.
Additionally, lots of extra-curricular activties are associated with academic success?

If that were true, the Democrats would never win elections. There are not very many voters who are like John Kerry.Originally posted by Ben Kenobi View PostWhy would you think that the majority of poor people would vote Democrat? Yes, rich kids' extracurriculars are positively associated with success, how shocking.Originally posted by Jon Miller View PostWouldn't that be better determined by the fraction going to sports/etc?

That's the key question, isn't it? You guys have literally no evidence that the extra money actually creates additional human capital.Originally posted by gribbler View PostSo at the more expensive schools the students are happier, but this has no significant effect on academic outcomes?

I don't have any studies, but I do have personal observations of people going to better schools (generally ones with more money) and getting better outcomes.

You claim people secretly crave entertainment for their children provided by schools and only claim they want to live in an area with good schools that will provide their kids with a good education. What exactly is the evidence for that?Originally posted by Kuciwalker View PostThat's the key question, isn't it? How much of your high school education translated into expected future earnings, gribbler? Just because some of the information wasn't helpful to one person in particular doesn't mean it was unhelpful. School needs to give a general education, if you aren't making use of some particular class, someone else might be.If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

I can tell you that the money spent on my high school provided very little entertainment value. If people say they're looking for good schools, then maybe they actually care about the perceived quality of the schools?Originally posted by Kuciwalker View PostHow much of your high school education translated into expected future earnings, gribbler? ? Additional dollars there seem to have provided human capital.
