You get about 9.5 not assuming double counting, ie, that people list two ethnicities. More accurately about half of these folks will have dual ancestries, which means that you are looking at a total of 7.1 percent, and that includes the Lebanese folks.

We don't need to experiment. Gay people do not inherently have HIV.

Gay people in long-term monogamous relationships are no more likely to have HIV than heterosexuals in long-term monogamous relationships. This was the crux of the study done by the Canadian doctors released last month.

And it's not that the situation is perfect now -- there's blood shortages. That's why the doctors want to increase the blood supply safely.

Not to harp on my one issue, but this is the same situation that exists with many issues affecting young people. Instead of looking at specific behaviors policy makers look at groups of people.

For example young people are more likely to die in car crashes (just like gay people are more likely to have HIV).

Most of the cause for the disparity in youth crashes is because of their increased likelihood to be low-income (just like the disparity for gay people is the increased likelihood of promiscuity).

If we looked at income level apart from age (or promiscuity apart from orientation) then you'd have a far more useful and less arbitrary and discriminatory metric when looking at accident rates (or HIV rates).

But I agree with Asher, gay people in long term monogamous relationships should absolutely be able to donate blood.

I'm not questioning your overall point, but don't young people have more accidents because they're inexperienced and impatient?

Doing the same for Canada gives me a figure of about 88 percent white people. Ours is Chinese at about 4.3 percent.

You have to understand that you are looking at the population as a whole, rather then just your subset.

And what makes it even more bizarre is the whole stigma against gays in so many minority and underprivileged communities which lowers the % of gays who are open about it (hence the whole down-low brother concept). That the % of minority homosexuals is understated as a result is probably very much true but there are no indications that minorities are more likely to be gay.

According to revised data (Brazilians are 25% white and Australians 90% white) and Ben's unassailable logic minorities are in fact 6.7x as likely to gay.
