One of my friends (more like a good acquaintance, we'd met a handful of times and went to a couple bars together) back from 2000 when I was just coming out subsequently killed himself when he came out to his (Catholic) parents and they kicked him out of the house and refused to speak with him.

You really don't want to bring this topic up with me, Asher, but at least I have the dignity not to talk about others here.

Asher, if he had remained in his faith he would have had the support he had his whole life. In turning his back and falling away, why would you blame his faith for his suicide? If he had kept his Catholic faith, he's still be here.

He wasn't out to them, but his friends knew. We knew what he meant. He had just graduated from Waterloo with a computer science degree.

Oh, no. I didn't say that religion had nothing to do with it. Take a religious person and turn them away from their faith, and knock out the support in their life, and you are surprised that they commit suicide? I'm not.

You want to blame Christianity, show me someone who has embraced Christ and then committed suicide, not someone who has rejected him.

I'm aware of the high suicide rate of gay teenagers, and I agree with you that it's appalling.

It's biblical. Anyone who calls himself a believer and publicly endorses sin in this fashion is supposed to be shunned.

That's your interpretation. The wonderfully ****ed up thing about religion is every sect, every person has their own.

Many religious parents think they're "helping" their son find Jesus by sending them to ex-gay camps (which also have appallingly high suicide rates, during and after), constantly reminding them that who they are is sinful and wrong, trying to get them to lie to themselves and others about something central to one's person, and in many cases, engaging in 'tough love' by cutting off all contact with their child until he "accepts Jesus"/fixes the gay and comes back. This is NOT unheard of.

I'm not saying all religious parents do it, but I am saying religion is a major factor in many of the suicides of teenagers. Christians, like Ben, frequently think they're "helping" when they're making their own loved ones' life a living hell.

These teenagers are already predisposed to impulsive behaviour biologically, they're already stressed the **** out about their sexuality, in many cases there's extreme self-hate brought on by being raised about how wrong homosexuality is...these kids feel they're broken, and when they realize they can't be "fixed"...they find other "solutions".

Christianity, even though most Christian parents I'm sure are loving and all of them have the best intentions, is an evil force even when it's trying to be good in the lives of gay teenagers. I'm not talking about the United churches or any churches which preach about how homosexuality is fine and normal -- we all know they're not real Christians anyway.

I'm a convert Asher. If you think I've not been though this myself, you are wrong. It was helpful to me, and I'm thankful I had someone who gave a **** about me when I was going through difficulties. But then, they had my best interests at heart not getting a cheap lay.

The statististics are pretty clear across the board. Homosexuality has a negative effect on a person's physical and psychological well-being. Homosexual men and women are more likely to abuse drugs, more likely to commit suicide, more likely to engage in risky activities, etc. We see this across the board irrespective of whether it's in San Francisco or Topeka.

You've shown me nothing that homosexual men and women who accept Christ and repent are likely to commiit suicide.
