Norway started a state run oil company that they took public.

They use the revenues to fund their pension sytem.

The issue is what to do with the cash, not how the cash is generated. Although, Petro-Alberta has a certain ring to it. The province could own a corporation that could pick up the slack when the private sector is unwilling.

Indeed. I was very surprised they'd be okay with me working remotely, especially a couple timezones away, but I guess it's more work to find someone to replace me than just to deal with it.

As for an update on that -- my job position has changed since then due to internal politics (my boss quit, teammate quit) which meant I took over his role, which I absolutely hate. Instead of doing development the past 3 months or so I've been attending meetings, sending hundreds of emails a day, making countless powerpoint decks, running teleconferences, etc. It's a management role and not a development role (or even development management role) that I'm not at all interested, which is why I gave my notice. I was basically dealing with the marketing department all/day, every day...telling them what they can or cannot do for "new products" and "new directions".

The CTO wants me to contract to maintain the mobile apps that I made, which is cool.

NYE has lived in Toronto for a time, too. He also lived in California for a time as well, just like me.

You have lived in Texas and have publicly cried about how much you want to move away from Canada into Texas. Don't call yourself a westerner.

This is why computer scientists are not economists. The tax is high to pay for services that ultimately save you money. For example, you may not have police or EMS services in Alberta, forcing you to pay out of pocket.

I've only applied to one job in Calgary so far, as I'm being exceptionally picky and in no rush.

I'm already on to the second round of interviews, 1.5h phone interview tomorrow for an R&D position for a decent-sized private company mostly owned by Intel Capital.

I nailed the mother****ing interview. Damn, I am a smooth talker.

They even told me they were "blown away" and immediately scheduled a final interview -- but the hard part is over. The next part of the interview is just me meeting the team and seeing if I'd fit in.

My success rate with job-offers-to-interviews looks like it'll continue to be soaring with only 1 miss in my lifetime (for a computer sales job in 2nd year uni).
