  • Definitely nowhere near as good as last week, but much better than "What Kate Does".

I don't know about that. The on-Island story was better in this one, but the flash sideways was even worse than the one in "What Kate Does", IMO. Who the **** cares about Jack's son that we'll never see again and what Dogen's life would be like without the Island?

The Jack alternative reality story was boring as ****, but the island reality was good.

I'm not sure how "good" the Island story was. The lighthouse was cool, but they didn't really do much with it and the rest of the story hardly advanced at all.

However, I do have one big problem with the island story. I appreciate what they're trying to do with Claire, I think it's a great story. I just don't feel that de Ravin has the acting chops to pull it off. I didn't get a creepy vibe from her, at all.

Agreed. I thought she was going to turn out to be good until the very last scene.

You can say that about all the flash sideways so far. We don't know the relevance of any of them.

As boring as the off-island story was, at least it was believable. The Kate off-island story was laughable on its face.

Also a big plus for this episode: the cave scene.

        • The alternative reality stories have also--at least thus far--nicely contrasted the personalities of the character in question in both realities. With the exception, of course, of Kate, who is a selfish, sociopathic ******** in every reality.

Not really. How did Jack end up with a teenage son in 2004?

I thought Kate displayed an admirable amount of empathy and concern toward Claire in "What Kate Does". You're letting your disdain for Kate cloud your judgment.

God, that pissed me off. How'd they walk all the way from the Temple to the Caves in a couple hours? And what purpose did that scene fulfill? All that happened was Hurley hanging a lantern on the Adam & Eve question and Jack revealing something he could've revealed somewhere else.

Locke's flash sideways was totally awesome and felt like a touching end to the dead man's character arc.

Why not? He's around 40, after all.

              • What spinal surgeon starts a family in their early-20's? Also, what effect would Jughead have had that would've changed Jack's life so drastically?

Yea, that bothered me too. Plus, the copout Hurley gave for not seeing the lighthouse.

The contrast between alt Jack and island Jack was great. On the island Jack, for the last couple seasons, has always been focused on a plan and not aware of anything but his plan to get off or back on the island or whatever. In the alt Jack we finally see Jack becoming more self aware. Setting up nicely the skills he will need on the island to save the world or whatever.

I knew lots of people in med school who had kids.

But that is no different than usual. She does something nice, with no real motivation; and even people who have every reason to distrust her end up saving her ass. The character drives me up a ****ing wall.

It keeps the white/black question to the forefront, and it was the perfect physical location to readdress Jack's daddy issues, given the coffin at all.

Now, the geography of the island, can't argue with you there. It is maddening.

Driven wannabe surgeons with massive daddy-issues?

Kate's motivation was seemingly some memory from her other life that came to her when she saw the killer whale. Similarly, Claire might have instinctively trusted Kate for the same reason. At least "What Kate Does" gave us tantalizing tidbits like this rather than boring **** like Jack's son and a new appendectomy.

                          • Well, you may be right. I was still like "WTF, Jack has a teenage son? Who the **** is the mother?" during the episode, though, probably because I never thought Jack would be 40.

Apparently, the actor was 38 when Lost debuted. The kid looked around 13-14, which would put Jack in his second or third year of med school when he was born. (Assuming he started med school at 22-23; there are numerous integrated bachelor's/MD programs around the country, however, in which case he could've been out of med school by the time the little brat was born.)

I read that totally differently. She saw kids stuff in the bag, felt guilty for mugging a pregnant woman, and went back to assuage her own conscience. As for Claire, I read that as her always being a bit of a sweet, well-meaning, trusting dim-bulb.

"The Lighthouse" at least gave us a meditation on Jack's daddy issues, and how he would revisit them upon his own child, and how he could potentially overcome them. "What Kate Does" told us nothing new about the characters in question, and the story was boring AND stupid. "The Lighthouse" gave us something new (admittedly not much, but something), was boring, but believable.
