It does seem unlikely; perhaps some sort of time travel was involved.

As to why people assume it was involved in slavery, Locke (I think?) called it slave ship when it was first seen, due to the skeletons in chains and whatnot.

An Australia-bound prison ship sounds more plausible, as I can't see how Alpert would've ended up a slave.

      • The next to last scene was great. Everybody hugging, and Ben off to the side watching. I don't know if Ben was thinking that he finally found somewhere he belonged or that he was never going to fit in with this group.

        • OK episode, but nothing in it excited me as much as the promo for the Alpert episode next week. Should be epic!

          • I did appreciate the way they used the Sideways story this week to keep us guessing about whether Sawyer was really on the Lockeness Monster's side. Whether it's correct or not, a lot of people have come to the conclusion that those castaways on Team Jacob end up with good endings in the Sideways world, while those on Team Smokey end up with bad endings. The writers seemed to be using that concept to screw with us tonight.

The episode starts out with what appears to be Sawyer back to his old conman games (bad!), but then we find out he's really a cop (good!). We then have some scenes on the Island where Sawyer seems to be questioning Smokey and considering a change of sides. Is he going to come over to Jacob's side? Sawyer then has a hot date with C.S. Lewis (good!), but flips out when she finds his Sawyer binder (bad!). He realizes his mistake and tries to apologize to her (complete with adorable Juliet sunflower) which, despite his failure, indicates that he's a better person in the Sideways world (good!). On the Island, we have the scene where Sawyer might be selling Smokey out to Widmore. Is Widmore on Jacob's side? Is this where Sawyer switches teams? At the very end of the Sideways portion of the episode, however, we find out that Sawyer, cop or not, is still the same revenge-obsessed, would-be murderer that he was before, which is followed by Sawyer warning Smokey of Widmore's trap and clearly putting his loyalty with Team Smokey. To top it all of, Sawyer seems to be hitching back up with Freckles (bad!). Heartache ensues for Sawyer fans.

This wasn't my favorite episode of the season, but I think both this episode and last week's Ben episode integrated the Sideways story into the main Island story much better than any other episodes this season.

              • I enjoyed it more than you did, Drake. I would watch "Miles and James, LAPD" on a weekly basis. I liked the contrast between the LA and Island worlds, and the discoveries on Hydra Island, and what they imply:

Ben killed Jacob. Is Widmore destined to kill Bizarro Locke?

Is Widmore the person Jacob wanted to find the Island? Is Ilana a part of his crew?

Was Bizarro Locke just blowing smoke up Kate's ass regarding his crazy mother? The seeds of doubt he sewed regarding Claire's fitness to raise Aaron will undoubtedly bloom.

I don't think for a moment James is getting back with Kate.

Lastly, three cheers for James, Lost's official man whore. Between Island James and LA James, he has banged Ana Lucia, Kate, Juliet, and Charlotte.

I'm with you on this. As for the rest of the episode, it was fine, but didn't capture my interest the way the Locke and Ben episodes did.

Dude, he lovingly squeezed the dress she was wearing when they got down in the polar bear cages. It's gonna happen.

Incidentally, from the available evidence, it looks like Charlotte would be the craziest in bed.

Agreed, but I'd still pick Juliet. That back makes up for the lack of a whip.

                          • Something that bugged me: Why would cop Sawyer help fugitive Kate escape at the airport?

                            • I liked the episode, but I will admit that I broke out laughing at the thought of him as a cop. They would make a good buddy cop show though.

He does seem to be the one that is actively making a choice, highlighted by his comment in the alter world of cop/criminal which later you find doesn't necessarily mean good/evil.
Everyone else seems to be fated while he still must make the final decision.

For all his talk about leaving the island, he is the one most alone and will eventually decide to become the next guardian.

AND YES, really looking forward to next week.

Probably figured that it wasn't his problem.
