  • I'm not sure how I feel about Jack. He was always kind of a dick, but heroic, and always trying to fix things. Now he's a bit of a dick in a different way, the "I know more than you do" dickishness of early Locke. Still trying to fix things, but in a different way.

The scene with Richard was very interesting, and all but confirmed that he arrived on the Black Rock, probably as a slave. (How he ended up as a slave is an puzzling question.)

I didn't get that impression from Jack at all. He seemed to not know what was going on and was pretty messed up by the realization that he had long been meant to come to the Island and do something that he didn't understand. He almost seemed to be hoping that the dynamite would go off and release him from his mission, which is completely different from Locke who reveled in the idea that he had a great purpose on the Island and that he was more in touch with the truth of the Island than anyone else.

      • Someone brought this up at the AV Club, and it reminded me of a theory I advanced here last year:

Remember when the people who were left behind started skipping through time, and they found a couple outriggers on the beach? Some unknown people started pursuing them and shooting at them in another outrigger; Juliet fired back and apparently hit one, toppling him or her into the ocean.

What if the people in the other outrigger were Bizarro Locke's army? What if the person Juliet shot was... James? That would be ****ing epic; just devastating. Or what if it was Kate? That would be ****ing epic for pure awesomeness. Fingers crossed.

He seemed certain that the dynamite wouldn't go off, but hopeful it would. It just seemed like an awfully rash way to make a point; not to mention dangerous if he were wrong. Not just to him and Richard, but Hurley too.

I do prefer this new Jack--it has been a terrific, organic character change, full marks to the writers and Matthew Fox--but he seems... less than stable. Even relative to how unstable he was before.

Yes, which is why I think he didn't care if he died (and possibly welcomed it).

Does it surprise you that skeptical, man-of-science Jack might be a little unstable after figuring out that Jacob had been watching him since childhood through a magical lighthouse and patiently moving Jack toward a destiny and purpose on the Island that Jack had been denying the existence of for most of the last five seasons?

            • Not surprised, no. Just worried. His erratic behavior endangerous all of those around him, which now include most of the characters I like.

              • Well, I'm confident that Frank Lapidus can't die. I think he's going to be the new Richard Alpert to Jack's Jacob. He'll be exactly as bearded and disheveled for the next 500 years.

                  • Minor point on the Black Rock: Dynamite was invented in 1867! That's far too late for English/American slave trade. If its not an oversite by the writers, my guess is that it was a prisoner ship going to Australia.

                    • According to an auctioneer selling the ship's first mate's journal, the Black Rock set sail from Portsmouth, England on March 22, 1845, purportedly on a trading mission to the Kingdom of Siam (now known as Thailand).

For the notable geological rocks seen in various episodes, see black rocks. The Black Rock was a fully-rigged 19th-century British trading ship that was found shipwrecked on the Island and overgrown by the jungle. The ship carried a cargo of slaves, dynamite, and other equipment intended for mining. In the midst of a large storm at sea, a massive wave swept the vessel inland, causing it to crash violently into the statue of Taweret, thus toppling the structure, leaving only the foot of the statu

Not sure why everyone thinks the Black Rock was definitely a slave ship.

                        • Maybe. It's possible that the dynamite was placed in the Black Rock after it had already ended up on the Island, though.

                          • I never even noticed this before, but Ben's dad is played by the same actor who played Lazlo in Real Genius, so we had two Real Genius castmembers on Lost tonight. God, I love that movie...

One can only hope. The awesomeness that is Frank Lapidus knows no bounds. His introduction scene remains one of my all-time favorite Lost scenes:

"Crash? What the hell kind of pilot do you think I am? I set her down safe and sound right over there."

                                ****ing awesome.
