Having once practiced in Baltimore, I can assure you that any sizeable Roman Catholic healthcare facility in that part of the US will employ lots and lots of non-Catholics. There's a good chance that Jews and Muslims will be found on their staff. I'm willing to bet they would employ some gays as well. It would be virtually impossible to get away with religious or sexual orientation discrimination in the healthcare industry in that part of the country, the professional staff wouldn't go along with it, and the professional staff would generally have the major say so in the hiring of professional staff. Since they almost certainly have gays on their payroll, and they're not likely to change their policy why finagle over employee benefits?

As for the US, Maryland was a Catholic colony, well before anything like the district of columbia existed.

Therefore, the Catholic church, at least in Maryland has prior authority. The DoC can't touch them because they owned their properties before the DoC was formed.
