Agreed. It's the best ST film, and the one that lots of non-trekkies like (I'm sensing some similarities with the new one there).
It's worth watching, really.

You guys are missing the point. The only reason why Alternative Spock's plan worked was because he got last minute assistance from the Enterprise.
If Spock Prime did that, yes he would have eliminated Red Matter as a source of destruction but you still would have the itsy issue of a space ship capable of destroying entire 23rd century fleets under the command of a madman. Christ there is no need to destroy a planet, just nuke it. It has been stated in TOS that the Enterprise could easily lay waste to an entire planet (if its undefended).
Nero would just have needed more time, perhaps he would need to contact 23rd century Romulans, perhaps he would need to do some mercenary work to buy the appropriate weaponry for planetary sterilization (though why the impressive arms that his ship has are not up to the task is beyond me). So in short Spock Prime trying to ram the ship results in a dead Spock and a Nero who needs 10 years instead of 10 weeks to complete his genocide (no big deal for a guy who waited what some 20 or so years doing nothing?)Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
