Why is there no thread on the most important current event? ST
These movies end up depressing me because I dont think it is possible to travel to the stars, at least like in Star Trek, and if we ever find aliens, probably they will suck and not be cool and humanoid.
The point is, the world of great movies like Star Trek won't come true, while the world of movies like artificial intelligence, probably could :/
but plot is secondary to the characters, which were well-done.
With perhaps the exception of Spock (he was good up to the last quarter of the film) how are any of the other characters, Kirk most of all, well done? To be clear I think they were cast well and they acted superbly, but their characters as written and developed were quite stupid.
"The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.
They are also the same guys who wrote Fringe and Alias.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
- John 13:34-35 (NRSV)
Probably on a similar level to Wolverine IMO; every other scene is just a joke/gag/quip.
Spoiler:
Uhuras' line "I'll be monitering your frequency" almost made the entire cinema LOL though. So cheesy...
I liked Spock though. I didn't think Quinto could do anything brilliant with him...and I was right IMO, but it was still a good clean break, and it was solid acting.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.
Just watched yesterday. It was decent. But I went in with high expectations since nearly everyone said it's great. I think it got such good reviews because most modern movies are crap. So it doesn't have much to compete against. Or maybe I'm just an old, cranky, man, and don't like the direction movies are heading. But perhaps the older movies weren't that great, but only seem great because I was a kid (or young adult) when I watched them?
Anyways there's so much wrong with this movie, I don't know where to begin.
First off- action sequences. Why is all action in movies now days done so you can't see the action. Shaking cameras, blurred images. WTF!! It's done this way to supposedly make it look like you are there doing the fighting. I don't want that! I don't want to fight, I just want to watch someone get their ass beat while I stand perfectly still. Hence, the camera should be still! To me it seems like lazy directing. Why make sure your action scenes are choreographed well when you can just blur the camera and keep moving it so no one has any idea what's going on. I couldn't tell if Kirk was getting punched, or the other guy. What's the point of violence is you can't see who's getting hit?
Unrealistic action scenes. While it wasn't too bad in this movie (seeing as Star Trek is based off unrealistic fantasy anyways), it's a disturbing trend in movies now days. I blame movies like the Matrix. I know they were pretty bad when I was a kid. Although I was pretty naive, at the time I saw Commando, I seriously believed a man could be strong enough to rip a car seat out of a sports car . I know better now. So perhaps these unrealistic action scenes began with action movies in the 80's such as Commando and Invasion USA and led into the 90's with such movies as The Crow and The Matrix.
Bad writing and humor. While there were some pretty funny parts to this movie, I felt it was a mistake to have the new actors say the same lines the old characters did. like, for example, "are you out of your vulcan mind?" The old lines just sound corny, and none of it was very funny. I think it was a mistake to keep some of the personality traits and more specifically the one liners of the old characters. The characters should have been updated. I know the hardcore fans would have griped, but who cares.
Mediocre bad guy. His acting wasn't bad, but there was no real motivation for his actions. They showed brief glimpse of some woman who died (his mother or his wife?- I'm not sure). Movies are so impersonal now days. And everything is on a world wide scale. So 6 billion people died, so what? If they showed tragedy on a more personal scale, I would have cared more about the motivations of the characters. Yes I know vulcans don't show emotion, but surely they could have had the Romulan villain cry, or show more rage. No one cries in movies anymore. There is so much violence in movies, but nothing showing the result of the violence.
Bad guys are essentual to movies, it's what made 2 a great movie. 3 was decent because you had a bad guy who killed Kirk's son (what more motivation do you need for the protagonist?). 4 had no bad guy with a face making it an inferior movie. 5 was a good movie despite poor directing as you had a bad guy who redeemed himself at the end (I like that). 6 was excellent as well as you had multiple bad people and a lot of political intrigue. 7 had a bad guy who wanted trancendence or something like that (can't remember all that well). 8 had the borg- but they made the wise decision of having a specific borg be the bad guy (or girl). And Data betraying her at the end was classic- making that an excellent movie. 9- well I don't remember much about that one. 10 was an attempt to recapture the strong bad guy like in ST2, but somehow failed. But at least they tried.
Now the good. Kirk as a youth. Awesome. Seeing him race that classic car (was that a vette?) and getting into bar fights was awesome (aside from my earlier gripe about fight scenes not being very clear about who's getting their face smashed in). Seeing bones gripe about his ex (I would have liked more ex jokes actually) was cool. Most of the characters were portrayed pretty awesome in fact. Aside from some of the corny, tired one liners I didn't like to see reused from the old series. Time to come up with some new one liners I say. But they did manage to recapture the essence of the 3 lead characters. Kirk, Spock, and bones. Sulu was great, Checkov I didn't care for too much in this film. Uhura was just a knockout. Makes me want a black girlfriend now. But she had the dialogue to match her looks, so I was impressed.
And finally one more gripe. I know star trek is fantasy, but they do try to pretend it could happen in our universe. Entering a black hole? Are you freakin' kidding me? Red matter? pulease.
In conclusion I'll revise my list. 2>3>8>6>5>11>4>7>10>9>1
I read your post, sir, but I discredit virtually everything you say as missing the point.
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
Ben Kenobi: "That means I'm doing something right. "
I've never seen III, and I don't feel like I have missed anything.
"The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.
what's the running time of this movie anyways? it seemed unbelievably short. I think they could have added more sex scenes.
IIRC just over 2 hours

went by pretty fast, so I guess that's a good thing. I would have liked to see a little more character development- esp. bones. He was pretty cool. I'd like to have seen Kirk and bones friendship grow.
Oh and a Kirk, Uhura, green woman 3 way.
But it seems Uhura is taken. So maybe a Kirk, Spock, Uhura 3 way. Not as sexy having 2 guys, but at least you still have Uhura.
