When you look at how the role of US in the world has changed during the last eight years, you realize that Bush was a wonderful President for enemies of America.

Just like Johnson four decades earlier, he was a very effective politician who bought popularity with loan-based government spending and loan-based economic growth. His legacy is that of corruption, incompetence and a creeping, hidden national decline. The spirits and patriotism of American citizens have been high during his Presidency, but I don't think that's an exceptional achievement when you get to lead right after the Clinton Years.

I remember a report (it might have been from the Onion, but there's an outside chance it could have been a legit wire report) back in 2004 saying that the Taleban and al-Qaeda endorsed Bush for President. The rationale being that he had done more for their recruitment and popularity in the Islamic world than any other single individual.

You know, I think we should be grateful we got Bush. Bush was a mediocrity, hardly up to the task of the office he was placed in. A man of more intelligence, more charisma, and more drive, could have made the United States into what many liberals feared it was becoming, a fascist state. The followers of Bush were ready for it. It is our great fortune they found expression of their desire for a great leader in a complete schmuck. We were lucky. It could have been ever so much worse.

What if Newt Gingrich or Trent Lott hadn't crashed and burned? Could either of them have become a more dangerous white house occupant?

Not for the issues, but for failing to account for them based on Government income and for the financial crisis, utilizing effective regulation to give us more warning. Bush cost us an enormous amount of debt because he was stubborn about raising money. That money he refused to raise resulted in debt it will cost our children a lot more to repay even with discount effects. Also, for 9/11 he invaded the wrong country and removed the principal bulwark to Iran in the Middle East; for Katrina, he so weakened the agencies responsible for disaster response, that they were late and undersupplied during the front-end of the crisis; For Rita (and Katrina) the response has been inadequate and little has been fixed by now, several years later; as to the financial crisis, people are going to end up in jail based on haw the money from the TARP was handled and deregulation left us with little warning forcing extreme responses in an effort to gain control; lastly not one of these crisis responses has been wrapped up to date. Very irresponsible!
