I understood the analysis just fine, it's just irrelevant to discuss Virginia when I'm counter-trolling Jaguar about Maryland. You missed that point completely with your pointdexter routine.

On the first page of results for "Northern Virginia population growth statistics": http://209.85.141.104/search?q=cache...lnk&cd=4&gl=us

It cites a five-year increase of ~15% for Northern Virginia (from 2000-2005). Compounded over 25 years (that's about how old you are, right?) that's equivalent to what you claim for Calgary. So, Jaguar has observed, in his lifetime, a region with growth rates comparable to Calgary's.

Everyone knows and acknowledges that Maryland sucks, which makes it a pretty poor countertroll.

The data is identical and directly cited from the official census data.
            Oh?

Why not just cite the census data. I mean I could set up a mirror of the census data, but it wouldn't mean that "Ben Kenobi says etc, therefore it is true."

-10 for your continual douchebaggery regarding wikipedia. This is casual discussion, I'm not wasting time dealing with PDFs and inconsistent poorly designed regional cites.
Then quit making an ass of yourself, and accept that people who have done their homework know what they are talking about.

"Northern Virginia" is not rigidly defined nor sourced in any census stats I found, nor do I care.
If you actually did research you'd be able to tell me which counties are in Northern Virginia. Since you don't I assume you are just pulling facts outta your ass.

-10 for you not citing any evidence to the contrary and simply adding noise.
I gave you a map so you could figure out what the hell Kuci was trying to tell you.

-10 for you not realizing that it doesn't matter. Do you not think that Alberta's population also nearly doubled in my lifetime? More noise.
And where's the evidence that NVA has not done the same? Just because Calgary is the fastest growing city in north america means **** all when you are comparing it with a region.

It's not ****ty, it's just inadequate for the population. There's a lot of constraints I'm sure you're not aware of (the river, the Native Reserves being the big ones, labour shortages as well).

                So does Calgary, you dumb****.

No, you can't assume that the growth has been sustained for 25 years (which is a major factor). You also aren't taking into account locality -- if a bunch of smaller communities each grow by a couple percent and the sum is the same, it's nowhere near the same thing when one city grows at that rate. The infrastructure challenge isn't even in the same ballpark.

They could not be more different. Calgary has been spending a fortune explicitly recruiting and importing labour from the east coast of Canada because they need the labour. When you have such massive growth in one confined area over a long period of time combined with a superheated economy and a massive labour shortage, infrastructure challenges always arise. Northern Virginia has not seen this. I'm not sure any place in the US has seen anything equivalent since the Gold Rush...

Yep, Kuci's right. The numbers are roughly comparable, assuming that Calgary's population has in fact doubled in 25 years.

HOW THE **** CAN YOU GET ON MY CASE FOR CITING WIKIPEDIA WHEN YOU REFUSE TO CITE ANYTHING AT ALL.

                        1) Cite it

                          According to statcan:

                          CALGARY in 1982, 623 133

                          CALGARY in 2006, 988,076

I expected you to make this mistake, but hoped you'd think about the logic closely enough to avoid it.

I never claimed the growth had been sustained over that time. The compounding demonstrated that the growth during the five-year period was comparable to the average growth of Calgary during your 25-year period.

And thus, my conclusion was that "Jaguar has observed, in his lifetime, a region with growth rates comparable to Calgary's."

You also aren't taking into account locality -- if a bunch of smaller communities each grow by a couple percent and the sum is the same, it's nowhere near the same thing when one city grows at that rate. The infrastructure challenge isn't even in the same ballpark.

You do realize that Northern Virginia is very dense, continuous suburban sprawl, right?

They could not be more different. Calgary has been spending a fortune explicitly recruiting and importing labour from the east coast of Canada because they need the labour. That five-year period wasn't particularly unusual. NoVA has been experiencing similar, even if not quite as large, growth since the 70s.

                              Calgary's population is 1,162,100.

2006 statistics are very old given Calgary's explosive growth, which is kind of the point. StatCan also only counts Calgary proper, not the "metro area" (where "metro area" includes the 'towns' now bordering on Calgary and are a few years away from annexation).

                                According to whom? Your ass?

                                Statcan doesn't say that.
