      • A proper statistical regression like this will have error bars, where they incorporate the standard error intrinsic to any poll. I've done plenty of graphs just like this one before. Heck, with the proper data, I could redo that graph with proper error bars.

        My point is this.

        EITHER

        1. That 19 percent back in Jan of 2008 is completely spurious.

        OR

        2. The 19 percent is on the far fringe of the error. It's either one or the other.

If Kontiki is willing to admit that point is wholly spurious, then we can move on.

            • I don't know what the name for them is. The book I read suggested that they came around as a response to Nixon (Imperial Presendency?). Personally I like republicans (and would vote for some) of other sort a lot better.

You've piqued my interest. Which journal publishes quality work such as this:

                Massive error bars there.

19 percent? That one poll is 15 percent off of the trendline.

If we accept that poll as accurate, then there are error bars of +/- 15 percent.

So the for the moment trendline according to pollster.com is 27+/- 15 percent, which means he could be anywhere between 12 and 42 percent.

                Truly awesome skills, that.

Do you not understand the inconsistency of your argument when you cite a single data point from a single pollster to describe Truman's approval rating in 1952?

You're well on the way there. You do realize that the Nazis did lots of bad things before they even started a war, don't you? You're far worse than they were before the war. The same applies really – you need to be stopped.

Why would I "admit" such a thing? I'm not making up the data. Here's the site:

It's all up to you. How well do you really know me? Am I prone to grandiose statements that haven't been backed up?

Thank you for making my argument for me. I think the approval polls are crap. If you are questioning the merits of the datapoints in the past, then what's the point of this discussion? Why not throw out all the data points as crap?

The above graph shows the point as of Jan 2008 as spurious, which btw is not my citation.

                            How is that 19 percent?

                            They say 21 +/- 3 percent.

I'm not particularly impressed by the idea that you've published in a peer-reviewed journal, I'm just curious. It didn't occur to me earlier that you'd be lying about it, but I suppose that's possible...

Because there's enough data to make a reasonable average over a short period of time? The most reasonable solution for the dearth in data in 1952 would be to average over a larger amount of time.

                                Regardless isn't 21% lower than Truman's 24%?
