Ideological balance is achieved when a candidate chooses a running mate from a different ideological strain to provide more widespread appeal. For example, a liberal candidate might want to chose a moderate or even a conservative running mate rather than another liberal in order to appeal to a broader base of the electorate.

Ronald Reagan, a conservative, chose more moderate George H. W. Bush as his running mate in 1980. When liberal Democrat Michael Dukakis ran for president in 1988 he chose Lloyd Bentsen, a moderate, as his running mate.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

Uh, I think Huckabee is one big minus to a lot of moderates.

I agree. He frightens me with some of his over-the-top religious rhetoric. IMHO appealing strictly to the far right religious wing of the party is not the best way to collect the votes in a national campaign.

          • Huckabee isn't an option for me.

Huckabee is not much different from the average person on the religious right. He supports teaching evolution schools (with Creationism being taught too of coarse) which is actually a bit of a turn off to the far religious right.

Problem is, is that creationism has no scientific validity, so it does not belong in any science course in any school.

Whereas the "with Creationism being taught too of course" is a turn off for everyone else.

Will didn't say anything about in which course Creationism would be taught though.

                    • If elderly McCain picks Huckabee as his VP, then Huckabee is one heart attack away from becoming P. That'll be good for America.

Yea, I'm thinking it's got to be someone conservative, but not Romney or Huckabee.

                        • From a 'what's good for America' view, you want another McCain, who's not going to rock the boat too much if McCain croaks.

From a 'get McCain elected' view, you want the nuttiest screwball you can find. For balance.

                          • That's why huckabee should be on the ticket with McCain. Frankly moderates should be happy with the compromise.
