Las Colinas is nice, I used to live right nearby in Irving. I believe it's part of the Coppell school district? (I went to Coppell HS for one semester when I lived there.)

It very well might be. I'm unfamiliar with a lot of the suburban school districts.

I keep bugging him, because it matters. The world is as it is, and there are certain areas that would keep him from acclimating as successfully as he might.

This is true. In several of the suburbs the culture shock will be much more "substantial" than in other places, shall we say?

DO NOT plan on moving to west nor south Dallas.
You can if you want, that's up to you, but, I'm telling you, if it were me, knowing Dallas, I wouldn't.
Areas of the suburbs on the west are fine. We've spoken of Los Colinas, for instance.

Garland and Mesquite are suburbs on the east, and parts are fine. The north side is the better side of Dallas.

Kids? Rent ot buy? I know a good man who is a realtor.

Yeah the cost of living is the best thing down there. Food at the grocery store is so cheap compared to here.

Sorry, things are kinda spiraling out of control here.

Deeply sorry Sloww, I posted where but it was in two different posts about twenty posts apart (51 and 69).

The position is with AAFES on their compound which is apparently located in Grand Prairie. I've not been given an address but I suppose I could find one if I needed to.

I'm from the Detroit area and an hour commute is not uncommon. So if the community surrounding AAFES is not as nice as others I have no problem making a trek.

I have a wife (Brazillian) and two kids (2 and 4).

My start date is 6/18/07 so these guys are cruising! I'm flying down on the 7th to get the fingerprints and background check dealt with and the acct. mgr. pushed for an extra day to look around so I get to stay 'till the evening of the 8th.

The recruiter down there already has a realtor they put me in contact with so I'm set there. I just wanted the "good parts" of town so I'd know if I were moving into the slums or a worthwhile house. (Again, being from Detroit "slums" is a relative term.)

Now I have to find something to do with this house and I'll be all set. Unfortunately the housing market (especially in Detroit) sucks donkey mellons so I don't know what I'm going to get.

Well, when I say culture shock, your kids will have a bit of a hard time if you move into "Hickborough." Some of the 'burbs are a little more parochial than others. Sloww' is right when he says the north is the better part of town.

Ok, so you're probably at the Naval Air Station.

Children. You're going to want good schools.
Richardson and Plano are out. You won't want the commute, and it would sour your adaption to Dallas, and I want you to like it.

Arlington might be your best choice. It's entertainment central on theme parks, sports stadiums, and such. Decent schools as I remember.

If you want a realtor's name, I know a good man.

I'm not positive. Los Colinas is, as we said, very nice.
Parts of Irving are less nice. I wouldn't compare any of it to South Dallas, and I'll admit predjudice about Richardson. Well run with lower tax base than cities that aren't as nice. But like I said, I can't bring myself to recommend Richardson and the commute.
I don't think light rail serves either Grand Prairie or Arlington, so you couldn't take it. It would be driving.

What about Mansfield? It's like a suburb of the metroplex, rather than of either Dallas or Ft. Worth, isn't it? Set out a little rural?
