LOTM doesn't troll, he's jewish.

Let's see a history major could be a paperboy, work at McDonald's, be a waiter, or just about any other menial job which most 18 year olds who didn't go to college can do. If you get lucky you can go on to be a teacher or do some mind numbing government job which also doesn't require much in the way of skills.
To bad you weren't a science or engineering major.
You think he stands a chance of passing law school?

I dont know. But heres my suggestion. Instead of asking us, call up one of the lawyers you worked with at that job years ago. Dont say youre looking for a job with his firm. Dont go in thinking youre looking for a job with his firm. Tell him youre looking for advice and suggestions, and mean it. Ask to send him your resume, just so he'll better understand what youre looking for. When you meet him ask him all the good questions you can about historians at law firms, what degrees they should have, etc, etc. Then ask him for names of other people who could give you suggestions and advice. Ask him if you can use his name when you call them.
He's retired now. Retired when his partner passed away and he didn't want to carry on the business. I was there just the one summer cause they needed someone who liked to research stuff.
Thats one of the best ways to find a job in an area where the employers are not obvious, or the fit is not obvious.
It also gets you out and talking to people about your career interests, which is good practice for actual interviews.
I've had a few already but I wanted to get some more opinions. Thanks for your help LoTM. I hadn't even thought about working for a law firm. I haven't done that since I got into data entry.

Im a Conservative Jew, which means I can troll in certain exceptional cases, as specified by the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards. And of course its accepted that there may categories of instances where I currently troll, but that my long term goal is to troll less

In all honesty I'd aim for teaching or government work. Failing that go to grad school to get a more useful advanced degree (law, medicine, a hard science) or get some sort of useful professional certification like a commercial pilot's license or something. The history degree by itself isn't worth much.
The long term plan is to get the dual certification to teach in highschool.
I can pretty much teach anything at that level from Math and sciences to history and english. Half my degree is physics anyways.

Retired is great. It means he has time, may want a chance to talk about what he used to do, will believe you when you say youre only looking for advice, and MAY have kept to ties to folks still in business. Thats all you want.
Think about it. If you know, say, 5 people and ask each one for a job, your odds arent too good. If you ask each one if they KNOW of a job, they know of ones at their own firm, plus on average maybe a couple of more. That gets you maybe 10 to 15 shots.
If you ask them who they know who may have good advice, you will get all 10 to 15 shots, PLUS you should get 10 to 15 more chance to ask, which means like 100 or more shots. And at some point you will hit the king of networking in the given field, who will know everything and everyone. Who lives for referring people and keeping up connections.

I don't know very much about the firms here, but I guess I'll have to find out more.
The firm I worked for was in Vancouver, very unlikely he would know anyone out this way, if he's not busy enjoying his retirement.

"Hi Joe, how are you doing? I really enjoyed working for you back in Vancouver. Ive now almost finished my degree and Im thinking of talking to some law firm in city X. Do you know anyone who would be good to talk to at a firm in city x? No? Maybe someone in Vancouver who might have some general suggestions, and who also might know some folks in city X? Oh, Jane Moe, thanks, I'll call her. May I use your name? Thanks"
"Hello, may I speak to Ms Jane Moe? I was referred to her by Joe Smith"
"Hello, Ms Moe, My name is Ben Kenobi, Im a history student at Univ of Z, and Joe Smith said you could give me some ideas about my job search."
"Yes, I understand you dont have any openings, Im really looking for some advice and suggestions. Ok. Yes, Joe is doing fine, really enjoying his retirement. No, Ive never met his wife - I used to work with him doing research at his firm. thats really what i wanted to ask about. Im really interested in doing research at a law firm - i think it would be a good use for my degree - but I dont know what firms are interested in, if my degree is really helpful, or not. uh huh. Actually since im looking in city X mainly, it would be especially helpful if you know of someone in city X i could speak with. ....

Good response asher, now might i ask why are you trolling? Is there somethign bout Bk that you cant live with out? Seems to me he is asking for serious advice and you make it your personal responsibility to make sure you tell him he is nowhere and noone. And when to be honest who the hell are you, but a canadian that works in a job that any other computer lackey can do to.
