      Cheques are so last millennium.

They used to be common here, but had been marginalized by credit/debit cards and direct bank transfers by 2000. Nowadays only a few elderly Luddites use them.
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

Oh, and to answer the thread question, I usually carry the equivalent of $10-20 on me in cash. I prefer using plastic for all substantial purchases, but cash is handy for coffee, etc.

Same here, I rarely use checks, but I do use them sometimes.

Except for Champagne, but I lose any respect for people who order it in clubs.

Oh, and usually ~£30 or so. Maybe £50 if on a night out, or perhaps more if on a dinner date. But usually I don't spend everything I have in a night. I just don't like being caught without.
Drinks around £30, maybe a bet on some football game £20, food £10, taxi £10, the random £10 you always can't work out where it went.. etc

Actually I'm with Will on this one, I really do not understand how people manage to squander such large sums of money on a night out - I've never been able to do it - on most of my nights out I am lucky to break £20!

I think my worst was something like this:

                        25$ supper
                        5$ transport
                        20$ cover
                        10x10$ drinks

                        =~150$ spent

Problem is that your idea of a night out is a bit frugal to begin with. Go to some trendy bar and, at the same time, attempt to get drunk. Then go to a club afterwards. Easy spend over £50 then.

Sounds more like my idea of hell rather than a night out...

$10 drinks!! Where in the hell were you drinking?

Even in overpriced places in Vegas, we don't charge that much for drinks.
