The only question in your post came across as being a rhetorical question. It's not a question of courage, because you could, with equal emotive weight, say one has the "courage" to believe, or take that leap of faith, and the "courage" to stand up to popular opinion and disbelieve.

Atheism requires just as much faith as theism... only atheists pretend that it's not faith.

People who are preoccupied with God, whether it be a belief in God or a lack of belief in God (atheist) are cut from the same cloth. The are mirror images of of each other. There are extremists of both ideologies (and yes, atheism is an ideology). It's just that atheist don't blow themselves up. But still, they get just as worked up when discussing such things.

I find it hilarious. For some reason, atheists are unable to admit there are things in the universe that they simply will never understand and never know. It goes hand in hand with a fear of the unknown, IMO. It's not just a desire to prove theists wrong, but there is a need to prove them wrong because they need certainty that there is nothing. I don't know why they have that need. I have some theories, but I don't want to start generalizing. And I can't talk about individuals here.

Atheism has nothing to do with science and people shouldn't mention them together, nor use science to justify atheism at all.

True enough. Faith in the same sense that a belief that there are no purple leprechauns living in underground colonies on Venus is faith. But this is not the time nor the thread for this debate, which I'm sure has played out several times before on Poly.

Sure it is.

Belief in purple leprechauns living in underground colonies on Venus is not a notion that is universal to human cultures spanning continents, time, and in isolation from each other. The idea that you can propose funny things that could be believed in, but are not, says nothing about the value of faith and spiritualism in human culture, let alone the existence of gods or God.
