Erm, no. Iraq is a huge, easy target. The Republicans appear able to attack almost anything - important issue or not - and benifit from it. This election they didn't have much to attack, having been the party in power, and had a great big albatross around their necks.
The Dems won because people are angry at the Republicans, simple as that.

I found this interesting in that the biggest issue according to CNN exit polling was corruption not Iraq. Iraq was 4th.
I'ld say the Dems were very effective at playing up the corruption as solely a GOP issue.
Not that there is anything wrong with it as you are either on offense or defense and the GOP was in defense mode almost the whole election cycle.
But your earlier point is valid. No need to expose yourself when your opponent is already in trouble.
Defying the traditional political maxim that "all politics is local," 62 percent of voters said in exit polls that national issues mattered more than local issues.
The exit polls showed that 42 percent of voters called corruption an extremely important issue in their choices at the polls, followed by terrorism at 40 percent, the economy at 39 percent and the war in Iraq at 37 percent.

The Republicans *did* have a number of ugly corruption scandals, and it's pretty clear that some sketchy things have gone on in Iraq (or here, with regard to Iraq). I recognize that both sides can be corrupt, but lately it's been mostly Republicans (since they've been in power).

Senator Goldwater voted against it as a matter of State's rights. That vote attracted the admiration of a lot of Southern whites, and their migration from the FDR Democratic coalition to the Republicans later formed the basis of Nixon and Reagan's Southern strategy.

Let me understand. The same people voting Democrat into the majority also voted anti-Gay?

US voters deal new blow to gay marriage
Voters in seven US states rejected gay wedlock by limiting marriage to unions between a man and a woman in one of the few bright spots for conservative Republicans in otherwise disappointing elections on Tuesday.Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

It's too bad about those anti-gay marriage amendments. The tide will turn eventually, but not yet.
