Agreed. And learn goddamn English if you're gonna stay. Speaking Spanish only in the United States is f-ing ridiculous.
Traditionally, the first generation speaks the language of their home country; second generation is bi-lingual and translates for their parents; third generation is English only...and can't speak to their grandparents.
The Catholic Church according to the New York Times.
I can't blame them. The statute makes it a felony for anyone to help someone they know to be an illegal alien or uses reckless disregard as to whether they are an illegal alien.
Since the Catholic Church helps poor, non-English-speaking Latinos it will be -- under this law -- committing felonies on a regular basis. Some of the people they help will be Americans; some will be legal aliens... but some will be illegals. And so it's off to the hoosegow with all those forks who work in Catholic charities.
Recalling back to the mid 1990's it was when loads of protesters where shown on TV waving Mexican flags and burning American flags that prop 187 went from a dead heat to a land slide in favor. These idiots still have not learned.

I guess you should be thankful for that
Seriously, I don't really give a ****, since this is so far away from here that it's probably the farthest away a person can be on this planet, but the principle of the matter should be anyone who considers themselves mexican and not american shouldn't be in america. It's not as if america was this restrictive country that demanded social uniformity - this is a simple demand that their allegiances wouldn't be with the people across the border, but with their new homeland. That's what the other immigrants did.
Btw, this is unlike, say, Irish or jewish immigrants: ireland and Israel don't have a shared geography with the united states. However, I also think that the allegiance of jews around the world is and should be first and foremost to the places they live in.
Assimilation
assimiliation indeed. You don't see me going around with a german flag on my car. Though maybe I should... I wonder what kind of reactions I would get.

I think that this may be one of the outcomes of identity politics, with more white people finding and identifying with their ethnic roots.

How is a flag a part of their heritage?
It's the nth Anniversary of Greek Indepence, so there's lots of Greek flags around T.O. There's a giant one draped over the central Meeting Place of my campus.
During Caribana, one sees plenty of Jamaican flags.
My gf lives in Little Portugal, and every street sign has a Portuguese flag motif.
Irish flags all around on St. Patrick's day.
I suppose the other two flags one sees often everywhere are the Toronto Maple Leafs banners and the Rainbow Pride one.
Maybe things are different in USA-land, but when an ethnic community rallies, it usually carries the flag of its homeland as a uniting symbol. Bah.

That would make sense if these marches were designed to be celebrations of their culture. For instance, it would be perfectly acceptable to have thousands of revelers waving Mexican flags during Cinci de Mayo. However, these marches were supposed to emphasize just how much illegals were part of the U.S., and to show how much the illegals wanted to be reated as legal Americans. With that goal in mind, it seems really stupid for them to be out waving thousands of Mexican flags to show what good Americans they are.

You've gotten it wrong. It was to show that Mexican-Americans are united behind the illegal immigrants' cause, and they make up a good sized voting block.
When Irish Americans (and Irish illegal immigrants) marched in New York, they carried Irish flags as well.
If it was to show how illegals were part of the US, then there'd be far fewer people there as there would be no reason for citizens to show up and march.

I don't recall the American flag burning, but I do remember how the sight of Mexican flags resulted in a horrendous backlash at the polls.
BTW: Third straight day of protests here in downtown L.A. Not as big as Saturday's 500,000 but enough to foul up traffic.
I also heard that high school kids marched down the Hollywood Fwy this morning during rush hour, causing a massive traffic jam....great, more backlash.

The reason that they'd show up is to show racial solidarity, which is what you said in the first place.
The demonstrators were ostensibly arguing in their demonstrations that illegals deserved residence, and that illegals just want to be part of the U.S.. That's why the prominent usage of the Mexican flag and the Viva Mexico chants were so counterproductive. It doesn't look like you're trying to emphasize the "Americaness" of the illegals when you're waving 400,000 Mexican flags.

All that making illegal immigration a felony and making helping illegal immigrants a felony would do is increase violent crime, break the prison system, and cost huge amounts of money. The basic undelying economic reasons for that immigration don't go away with criminalization- all it does it make the criminals more powerful because the illegal will by forced be marginalized.
Hopefully the moronic house that passed that attrocious law will soon go down in defeat. But nice to know anti-immigrant pandering still gets people out to express their hatred. Now if only the Natives had been more able to deport their ancestors.
