Unless you can give ANY explination whatsoever for the connection made in the speech between Jesus and Bolivar, you are talking out of your ass, out of your element, in short, your general position.

Unless you can explain the connection made between Jews, Freemasons, britons and international bankers, any claim that the 19th century populists were antisemites is talking out of your ass. Obviously Hofstader in "The Paranoid Style in American Politics" was as much an idiot as those at the Wiesenthal center, right?

Populists dont necessarily make logical connections in their rhetoric - they make EMOTIONAL connections - they draw an emotional equivalance between 1st century Palestinian Jews (his death be on us and on our children) 19th century Spaniards and rich, and 20th century wealthy Venezualans, the IMF, and the American leadership (that the current US admin has several prominent Jews and is a notorious supporter of Israel is only bonus for this rhetorical strategy)

The Jews did not actually kill Jesus the Roman Empire did. Spain France Germany Italy U.K. are all direct descendents of that Empire.

It is pretty weak to say Spain killed Jesus.

it's also pretty weak (and wrong) to say that those countries are 'direct descendents' of rome as well...

Jesus Christ.... he's talking about a class of people with no identifiable race: the sort of people who betray people like Jesus and Bolivar. He's talking about those who hate the poor.

I cannot find anything about Jews betraying Bolivar. The only thing I can find about Jews and Bolivar is that some Jews helped him. Thus the Bolivar comment clearly shows what Chavez is talking about.

Why is there even a debate? It's clear what he means.

Of course this is just an excuse for professional whiners to get into the media..

he is talking about the roman empire and the usa who are the roman empire of this days, by the way,. that english paragraph is incomplete, this is my crappy translation from spanish to english

The world has enough for everybody, but, a minority group, the descendants of those who crucified christ, the descendants of those who kicked Bolivar out of here, and crucified him in a way in Santa Marta, there in Colombia, a minority group grabbed the riches of the world, the gold, the silver, the fertile lands, the oil, and they have concentrated the riches in few hands, less than 10% of the world population owns 50% of the wealth, and more than 50% of the world population is poor, and every day there is more poverty.."

Chavez is officially a prophet. For thousands of years people can debate on his teachings and what he really meant.

Um, to me it sounds like he's saying the Romans and Spaniards. In other words, the "capitalist oppressor". Or maybe he's just trying to put himself in the same list as Jesus and Bolivar, which I assume are probably the biggest two "heroes" over there. Making him the underdog fighting against the evil USA et al. Like Bolivar fought the Spaniards and Jesus the Romans (well, sort of). Chavez your new saviour, blah blah... Nothing specifically anti-Semitic in any case.

so why didnt he say the romans, or the rulers, or whatever? Why just "those who killed jesus"? I think its possible the ambiguity was deliberate - he can rouse the emotions of antisemites (for his own populist purposes, of course), while at the same time he has "plausible deniability".

Maybe. But then he also said "those who killed Bolivar". Why didn't he just say the Spaniards? But no-one's popping any veins over that.
