  • Chavez: man of the masses, protector of the weak, racist

"Some minorities, descendants of the same ones who crucified Christ ... took all the world's wealth for themselves,"
Said the great freedom fighter in his Christmas address.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

            Hugo Chavez Accused of Anti-Semitism

CARACAS, Venezuela — A Jewish rights group accused Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez of making anti-Semitic comments in a Christmas Eve speech.

The Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center demanded an apology Wednesday from Chavez saying such remarks have long been used to persecute Jews.

"The world has enough for all, but it turned out that some minorities, descendants of those who crucified Christ, descendants of those who threw Bolivar out of here and also crucified him in their own way in Santa Marta, there in Colombia. A minority took the world's riches for themselves," Chavez said, according to a transcript of the Dec. 24 speech. Simon Bolivar led the 19th century fight to liberate Venezuela and some other Latin nations from Spanish rule.

Chavez did not did specifically mention the Jewish people in the televised speech.

A spokeswoman for his office said it had no immediate response to the complaint.

"In your words, the two central arguments of anti-Semitism emerge ... the accusation that Jews killed Jesus (and) associating them with wealth," the Center said in a letter to Chavez. "Our center strongly condemns your anti-Semitic declarations."

Another Jewish leader, U.S. Rabbi Arthur Waskow, said in an e-mail he has serious doubts it was an anti-Semitic slur.

"I know of no one who accuses the Jews of fighting against Bolivar," wrote Waskow, of The Shalom Center in Philadelphia. "And certainly I _ and most Jews _ teach that it was the Roman Empire, and Roman soldiers, who crucified Jesus."

Chavez's comments came in a part of the speech about the world's poor.

Chavez, a fiery speaker, has called President Bush a "madman" and also used a derogatory term for "jerk" in referring to him. Chavez has also criticized Mexican President Vicente Fox.

The rabbi has to be on drugs. It's a clear cut case of anti-Semitism. The Jews are Christ killers and greedy bastards who hoard all the wealth in the world. What else would you call that?
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

the specific part is on page 18

indeed, that quote is taken out of context

Chavez was speaking of the Romans as the "crucifiers of Christ" and he was speaking about the concentration of wealth in general...

HE WAS NOT TALKING ABOUT THE JEWS

What he said only makes sense if he was bashing the US and comparing them to the Romans, not the Jews. Though knowing how Jews were treated in the past as "Christ-killers" he should of been more careful about how he said it.

                          This is the quote:

"The world has enough for all, but it turned out that some minorities, descendants of those who crucified Christ, descendants of those who threw Bolivar out of here and also crucified him in their own way in Santa Marta, there in Colombia. A minority took the world's riches for themselves,"

What the hell did Jews have to do with Bolivar? There were not many, if any, Jews in Gran Colombia at the time.

The Romans crucified Jesus, not the Jews. That the Jews are christs killers is a common old Cahtolic refrain, but that does not mean Chavez is much of a catholic.

The minority could just as well be stated to be the Upper classes, the patricians, who killed Christ (Pontus Pilot was no poor man) and ended Bolivar.

This is finding something because you want to see it there.

Wiesenthal Center slams Chavez "anti-Semitic" talk
                            04 Jan 2006 21:55:39 GMT

CARACAS, Venezuela, Jan 4 (Reuters) - Prominent Jewish rights group, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, accused Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Wednesday of using what it said were anti-Semitic remarks and demanded an apology.

In a televised Christmas Eve speech, Chavez, a left-winger and a former soldier, said that "minorities, descendants of those who crucified Christ ... have grabbed all the wealth of the world for themselves."

Chavez, a Catholic, did not mention the Jewish people and in the same comments referred to the betrayal of Venezuelan liberation hero Simon Bolivar. But the group said his remarks represented central arguments of anti-Semitism -- accusing the Jews of killing Jesus Christ and associating them with wealth.

"Both elements have served as a perfect excuse to justify the most cruel persecution and killing during two millenniums," the Wiesenthal center said in a statement.

"Our center strongly condemns his anti-Semitic declarations. This insult to universal humanitarian values demands an immediate retraction and public apology," it said.

An official from Chavez' presidential palace said the government had no immediate comment.

The center's International Relations Director Shimon Samuels and its Latin America representative Sergio Widder also sent a letter to Chavez demanding an apology, according to the center's statement.

They said they would call on the governments of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay to suspend Venezuela's entry into the Mercosur trade bloc until Chavez apologizes.

The center said "the reactionary and medieval rhetoric" echoed that of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who last month expressed doubt the extermination of Jews by the Nazis known as Holocaust occurred and suggested the Jewish state be moved to Europe.

Chavez, a vocal critic of Washington, has recently been fostering ties with Iran as he builds political and trade alliances as an alternative to U.S. influence.

The influential Simon Wiesenthal Center promotes tolerance and confronts issues like racism, anti-Semitism, terrorism and genocide. It also deals with the prosecution of Nazi war criminals, neo-Nazism, and hate on the Internet.
