    Something to ponder:

"And [Yaakov] dreamed, and behold there was a ladder, secured to the ground, with its head reaching to Heaven, and behold, the angels of the L-rd ascending and descending upon it." [28:12]

There are any number of beautiful explanations of this verse found in the Medrash and later writings. One such perush asks that we look at the ladder as a parable, applicable to a human being. Though we are "rooted to the ground," going about our daily lives and dealing with the physical world, each of us is nonetheless given the opportunity to have a "head reaching to Heaven."

What does it mean to have a "head reaching to Heaven?" This refers to a person who goes through life doing his or her actions for the sake of Heaven. If we analyze our behavior, and work every moment to increase our spirituality, learning, and good deeds -- as well as those of others -- then this is a "Heavenly" life. Every minute of the day offers us this opportunity to be "rooted to the ground" with "a head reaching to Heaven."

Not only do we affect ourselves, but "the angels of the L-rd ascend and descend upon it" -- the whole world, physical and even spiritual, depends on the actions of human beings. The Kabbalists say that each time a person does a Mitzvah, s/he creates a "good angel" -- and, Heaven forbid, the opposite is also true. If we live spiritual lives, then we bring light to the entire world, and even the angels are uplifted.

We see a demonstration of this later, when Moshe ascends Mt. Sinai to receive the Torah. When the nation of Israel turns away from their leader, and appoints a Golden Calf to replace Moshe -- with some even worshipping it as an idol -- "G-d said to Moshe, 'Go, descend, for your nation has defiled itself, that which you brought up from the land of Egypt." [Shemos 32:7] When Israel defiles itself, it -- and the world -- no longer can sustain a leader who is up in Heaven, speaking directly with G-d.

The Torah tells us again and again: each of us has the opportunity to affect ourselves for the better, and simultaneously to have an impact on others as well. It begins with us, as individuals. "Tikkun Olam," perfection of the world, can only come about by beginning with "Tikkun Atzmo," perfection of one's self. Every generation hopes that it will be the one to finally perfect the world; the Torah tells us where to start.

    Good Shabbos,

    Rabbi Yaakov Menken

He makes me sad. Very sad.
That's what the "meek" do... they tell you how they rule the Earth.

Besides, with Fez (or is he back?) and Ned(iverse) gone he brings a whole new world (universe?) to explore. So naturally his thread has hit 2+pages. Did the guy (whatever his name was) who came back from the dead go off & die again too?

I can think of only three people that fit this: Faded Glory, Bill 3000, and Jebus.

And the first two are still alive.

It is always to a joy to know what great feats of learning we may learn from our elder brethren the Jews, who are the children of the original covenant. The day will come Rabbi when just as the story of Joseph states in Genesis, the 12 tribes will be reunited with the Messiah, even though he took some time to minister to the Gentiles. If the children of Jacob had not ganged up on Joseph and drove him into the pit, then Joseph could never have gone to the land of the Gentiles to save them from the famine (representative of their sins). But we must remember, that the height of the story is when Joseph (who represents Christ) is reunited with his brethren from Judah to Benjamin. This represents the Jews recognizing Jesus as their Messiah near to the last day when all shall be judged.

The story of Joseph in Egypt and many other stories actually represent Christ. Another example? Only when Moses raised his hands in the air did the children of Israel defeat their foe in the wilderness. Whenever he lowered his hands, Israel was broken; but when he raised them again- they were victorious! This represents the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, whose hands are ever raised as he is spread out upon the tree of redemption. Whoever looks on the cross in battle against the children of the devil will be victorious, and whoever forsakes it- will perish.

Jonah also gave a sign. For he was in the fish 3 days and 3 nights, and then preached to the Gentiles at Ninevah. Christ was in the tomb 3 days and 3 nights, and then preached to the Gentiles.

Of course, there are always some who will see these prophecies, and understand the truth beforehand.

                        I hate you, Ecthy.

Sheesh. That was so long ago. But yeah, I didn't kill myself or make a post saying that I did or the like. I did make a "Life is meaningless" post and got extremely depressed. I just got hospitalized. And yes, I did try to choke myself with a towel.

How come my Old Testament doesn't have all these nifty paranthesis thingys? It just reads like the Messiah is supposed to rebuild the temple, begin animal sacrfices, and usher in world peace by making everyone convert exactly like Madonna.
