You are quite right - the same mechanisms worked here too, so in that way there isn't that much difference. I guess that the euorpean hippies extreme antiamerican notion was also to be found in the american ditto.

Didn't really want to enrage you, but there are actually some illiterate here on the web that might had belived you and thought that hippies only existed in the US - there are after all some youngsters here that haven't experienced those "good old days"

Frederic Lagasche, chief of the largest police union, said Monday that police believe the unprecedented confrontations between immigrant youths and police that began nearly two weeks ago has been orchestrated by various criminal gangs.

The goal, he said, is to perpetuate a system in which drug-dealing gangs control hundreds of crowded housing projects by making it impossible for police or other outsiders to gain entry. As a result, public services to the crime-ridden housing projects have been cut, he said, spreading discontent among residents.

He said the gang leaders are using younger teenagers to challenge the police in the nightly bouts of car burning, looting, and rock throwing that have intensified.

This statement is up to debate. Nicolas Sarkozy insists that the violences are organised by criminal gangs, and his supporters will go in his direction. On the other hand, many in the police and the judiciary believe that the drug-dealers do NOT want trouble on their territory (see the article from Le Monde I summarized earlier)

I'm not sure if this was covered earlier in the thread but why was there even no-go areas for police in the first place. France isn't Iraq after all.
