I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

would the mods object to a new thread, that actually focused on whats going on now in France, and NOT on comparison to the US and UK historical experiences?"A person cannot approach the divine by reaching beyond the human. To become human, is what this individual person, has been created for.” Martin Buber

It's a difference of scale. If the rioters managed to take and hold significant chunks of real estate for a significant amount of time then it would become a rebellion. If they posed any real military threat to the existence of France as a unified entity then it would become a civil war.Originally posted by BlackCat

What I don't understand is how the incident that sparked the Paris riots resulted in rioting. When the LA riots happened, we had police severely and criminally beating someone. In this case, we had a pair of kids doing something fatally stupid of their own volition.
It's not just the number of riots or the size of riots, it's what sets them off. That's what I see as a big difference between the US and Europe -- people are willing to riot for less reason. No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

As I understand the story, the police have a habit of setting up random checkpoints to check IDs. Some may see this as the injustice which led to the deaths, which in turn justifies the riots.Originally posted by The Mad Monk

Seems to be a last drop kind of situation. As far as I understand (and some of the french posters might put me right), the ban lieues in question were pretty much no go areas for police anyway (for american posters, think inner city projects, in other words social housing with a largely unemployed population). I think it's less a case of immigrants as much as the disaffected kicking back because they see themselves being treated unfairly. That most of these people are immigrants is a coincidence to some degree.

The pics do look like US "projects" I dont think even such notorious projects as Cabrini Green in Chicago, Pruit Igoe in St Louis, or various projects in the Bronx, were ever quite "no go" areas for the cops though.Originally posted by lightblue

The last huge multiple night riot like this in the US, I thnk was the Rodney King riots in LA, back in '92. And of course the riots on the death of ML King in 1968, in several cities.
although there havent been any deaths, AFAICT, beyond the original two. In LA during the Rodney King riots, there were several dozen deaths, though the riots were over in a week.Last edited by lord of the mark; November 3, 2005, 14:59."A person cannot approach the divine by reaching beyond the human. France does seem to have a habit of violent upsurges every few years. Drake's article blames multiculturalism - I think it's the opposite. French nationalism is both over-the-top and lacklustre at the same time. They get fired up over trivialities (headscarfs) or the indefensible (keeping the same number of EU votes as Germany, the CAP).

I found a good essay today that lays out the background for these riots. Very prescient...
