  • they play 8 conference games. With 11 teams it means you have to skip 2 every year. They rotate which 2 you skip. It just so happens that it is those 2 this year.

    • Actually Pchang you aren't quite correct.

Currently each team has 2 "rivalry" teams they play EVERY YEAR.

Michigan for example plays MSU and OSU every year and rotates the other 8 teams

Michigan State play Michigan and Penn State every year and rotates the other 8 teams.

So in essence a team always plays its 2 "rivals" and has a 75% chance of playing the remaining 8 teams. To the extent that Michigan and OSU are usually the 2 dominant teams anyone who has those teams on thier "rival" list is at a disadvantage.

      • So, who are Wisconsin's "rivals"?

          • Pchang I was a little incorrect.

Every team does have 2 "rivalry" teams that they play EVERY YEAR.

The remaining 8 teams are rotated every other year - not every year.

For example Wisconsin plays the exact same Big 10 schedule in 2005 and 2006. (yes that means they miss MSU and OSU 2 straight years) But they alternate home and away with the teams they play. Then 2 non rivals drop out and 2 are added. So in Wisconsin's case Northwestern and Purdue will drop off for 2007 and 2008 and Michigan State and Ohio State will be added.

As for who Wisconsin's "rival" teams are? I don't know. But it is easy enough to figure out. It isn't OSU, MSU, Purdue or Northwestern. Look at last year's schedule and u can eliminate 2 more teams. Then look at a schedule from 3 years ago and u can elminate 2 more teams, thus leaving the only 2 teams it could be.

Just about to do that myself.

One of Minnesota's rivals is Wisconsin. I believe the other is Iowa, but I might be wrong.

See? If Wisconsin were truly a top ten team, they would walk all over Northwestern. They are good enough to be ranked, but not top ten...

Never fear though. Wisconsin will pull it out.

                            • OSU just doesn't have any offense. It's a shame, because their defense is first rate.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
