  • Am I correct in thinking that ND still is effectively guaranteed a BCS bowl appearance if it only loses two games? It has been so long since I checked up on the BCS deal.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

    • With regard to those teams that ND has defeated, all of them were ranked when ND layed them low. Getting beat by ND takes a lot out of these teams, because they have a lot emotionally invested in the game. A lot of one-way rivalries.

Your point? What does an early season ranking matter? You really think beating Pitt is worth anything nowadays?

If that's true, there would be some VERY pissed off people around there. I don't think ND is as good as some of the teams in the SEC or ACC that won't win their league. There are two at large spots, IIRC. I would rather put Alabama and Florida State (considering Georgia and Virginia Tech win the SEC and ACC respectively) in.

            • All I'm saying is that beating ND will resurrect a season, so people bring their best. If that's not good enough and you lose, it helps put you on tilt.

              • The special provision for Notre Dame is that they automatically qualify with 9 wins or a spot in the BCS top ten, but only if another team from a non-BCS conference also qualifies. The latter ain't happening, so Notre Dame is subject to the same rules Utah was last year - they have to finish no worse than sixth in the BCS rankings.

(When the BCS changes either next year or the year after - I forget which - to a five-game system, that special provision will change so that Notre Dame qualifies irregardless of other events if it finishes no worse than eighth in the BCS rankings.)

Me thinks you are a bit biased. I'm sure no one thinks beating ND after the last few seasons they've had will 'resurrect' a season, especially with Pitt & Michigan who had nothing to resurrect (though UM always does consider the ND game a big one even when ND sucks).

Even if DanS's scenario were true, there's another team for the BCS non-conference winners to get pissed at before Notre Dame: Whoever comes out of the utterly pathetic Big East with that conference's automatic bid. (I'm not even sure it's going to be Louisville anymore. In fact, if the season ended today, Connecticut would face West Virginia in a playoff for it...)

If ND is 9th or whatever and doesn't get in, you will have lots of pissed off BCS bowl presidents who were looking for a big payday.

The beginning of the end of the BCS?

In any event, a two loss ND team might actually be top 6 this year.

You're living in the past, Dan. A game against a team like USC or Texas or Miami is a bigger game than one against Notre Dame these days.

Only if you think Louisville will lose again, which I don't think they will. They had a mental breakdown against USF. They've rolled against everyone since. They won't let it happen again.

That's what everybody says, but it doesn't ring true to me. You know, I haven't had TV access to too many USC games this year, even though they're back-to-back national champs. Have you? But every ND game but one has been broadcast coast-to-coast. The exception was Washington, for which the local ABC stations were given a choice whether to broadcast. The ND v. USC game will be the most-watched game of the regular season. The Pitt and Purdue games will probably be the most-watched ESPN games of the regular season.

Yeah, because you are a Notre Dame FAN!

Mostly because ND has had their own television deal for years. It isn't based on their record, but on the money that comes from Notre Dame fans willing to spend a lot of money, and the old Catholics who'll back ND till the end, even though they never went there. Doesn't make it a bigger game though.

I've seen plenty of USC games this year. But the Pac-10 doesn't have a deal with the major networks. I believe they have a deal with TBS.
