Secession Thread II - Canadian version: Canada, "the Argentina of the 21st century"
Actually, Canada is a place I'd be willing to emigrate to, if I ever wanted to emigrate again.
I admit that I porbably wouldn't go to Alberta tho

Jeeze, how did I miss this one? OK, if the right wing nuts want to take Alberta out of confederation, they're gonna have to leave Edmonton. Hell no, we won't go!

Aside from keeping dips on the hydrocarbons, why allow Alberta into NAFTA? What does Alberta make that can't be made just as easily in, say, Ontario or other places?

Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Hmmm. I thought it was BMO. I am finding it difficult to find anyone claiming to be from Calgary. There is a CoCalgary site claiming Bank of Nova Scotia.
I know one of the chartereds moved there. Maybe they have moved out again due to the bad climate.
That's because there are no major banks based in Calgary. Bank of Nova Scotia is based in Toronto, as is BMO.
That's because banks are not a mainstay of the Calgary economy, as I was saying.
There would not be a massive exodus of companies leaving Calgary if Alberta seperated. Might be a few here and there, but the even lower tax environment and higher standard of living may just bring more people in.

That doesn't see to stop the folks from Quebec from contemplating separation, or was that sovereignty assocation, or whatever they are calling it nowadays?
Quebec makes the point not disputes it. Generally only francophones are interested in separation. It is incredibly unpopular among anglophones and allophones and pretty much anyone that has come to Quebec from ANYWHERE outside Quebec. Put bluntly, many francophone Qubecers have no family connections outside Quebec.

Secondly, I'm not really in agreement with Alberta to remain a political entity in itself. I'm looking at it forming a union with the United States, which is a far more thought provoking and interesting option.
NO thank you

I think that so long as they have good jobs and can continue to keep the good jobs that aren't available in Newfoundland, then I don't think they will worry too much about the feds treat the folks back home. Last I checked, the Newfies were pulling down Canadian flags themselves.
Two points
1. No matter how newfoundlanders (in NL or AB or anywhere else) feel about Canada, they generally have a strong and long-lasting connection to Newfoundland
2. Yes the premier pulled down the canadian flag in a protest and it worked to attain his goals . . . Generally however, Newfoundland separation is proposed by only a fringe few and people are happy to be part of Canada
