  • Quebec makes the point not disputes it. Generally only francophones are interested in separation. It is incredibly unpopular among anglophones and allophones and pretty much anyone that has come to Quebec from ANYWHERE outside Quebec. Put bluntly, many francophone Qubecers have no family connections outside Quebec.
But also note that not all Francophones are seperatists. Some french communities are very heavy in seperatist values, and some french communities dearly love Canada.

In some cases, political alliegence would seem to run along the lines of standard of living, but not always.

Really -- folks like kidicious and agathon seem to think I am a corporatist rightie ( which I assume is what you would mean by "sound like an Albertan")

I've only been here 4 years so maybe it takes a while for the WHOLESALE shift to the right to occurr

Well, you have neither the "I have oil so I'm the best, you idiot" attitude, nor do you have really passeist perceptions that are expected from such a backwater

How can we possible guess you're from Alberta

            • The cattle ranchers are on life support. There isn't enough slaughter capacity up here (yet) to ship enough boxed beef (allowed) and the border remains closed to live animals going south (where the slaughter capacity got moved some years ago).
Interesting. Moving up the slaughter capacity in Canada, and then shipping the beef down to the US. Sounds like a great deal for Canada.

What does "passeist " mean? Dictionary.com did not know either.

More generally I am originally from a far bigger "backwater" than Alberta could ever be. I grew up in rural Newfoundland.

Yes Alberta is conservative but I think more often its fiscal conservatism arising from affluence. It is also socially conservative compared to the rest of Canada but less so than is often portrayed. There are lots of social liberals in the ranks of the provincial Conservatives

That's a problem right there for unity, if the Quebeckers remain enclosed within themselves.

The primary reason why the anglophones in Quebec don't want Quebec to separate is not because of family connections in the rest of Canada, but because of how Quebec treats Anglophones. If Quebec separates, there would be an exodus of anglophones, as my uncle did, in leaving Montreal for New Hampshire.

As for union with the United States, why not? Then you would have access to an international port without having to cross national boundaries. It seems to me a vastly superior option that going at it alone. Another option would be forming a union with BC, and I know Northern BC would be inclined to such an arrangement, since that is where I am from. You'd even have access to a port in Prince Rupert.

                      1. No matter how newfoundlanders (in NL or AB or anywhere else) feel about Canada, they generally have a strong and long-lasting connection to Newfoundland

                      2. Yes the premier pulled down the canadian flag in a protest and it worked to attain his goals . . . Generally however, Newfoundland separation is proposed by only a fringe few and people are happy to be part of Canada
Many Newfies still complain about joining Canada, and the deal made to bring Newfoundland into Canada in the first place. I don't see the indication that they are unwilling to play the separation game, since they have shown a willingness to pull down the flag.

I think, given their oil revenues, they are going to look more and more at Norway, rather than having to share them with the rest of Canada. And I don't think they will be the last to play the separation card, since that has proven to be the most effective way to get the attention of the federal government. Quebec is teaching all the other provinces that they need to look out for themselves first and Canada second.

                      • TBH, the only reason I'm trolling the Albertans in this thread is because I got to know them through Asher. It affected my perception of Albertans somewhat

(In other words: I wasn't looking for a serious discussion on the Albertans)

Yes, I saw the resident bit, but as you know your roots are probably more influential than your current address unless you've been there a considerable length of time.

I suspected you were from the east coast. I was thinking Nova Scotia for some reason (school?).

Ben - My first gf moved to Burnaby when we were young (don't ask). Broke my heart.

I'm Ontario born and raised. Born in Peterborough but have lived in most parts of the province for varying lengths of time. Currently in London.

                              • Well, I was born in the hospital in Burnaby. My folks lived out in Langley, in the Fraser Valley, but I don't have any memories of my life there.

My earliest memories are of Prince George, in the house we lived in before we moved into the house where my parents still live in today. So it doesn't make much sense to say that I am from Langley, since I don't remember anything from there.
