The obvious...Why would the US want Alberta? If it were to secede in large part because of not wanting to share its wealth, that doesn't make it a very attractive candidate for statehood.

Except we don't actually let our states secede.

          • None of the provinces are yet in absolute decline, but Newfoundland is in decline due to interprovincial migration. All of the Maritimes are close to absolute decline.

Alberta is gaining 43k people a year, only 17k of which are immigration and 10k of which are interprovincial.

Ontario is gaining 136K, 128K of which is immigration.

The crude birth rate dropped to 10.5 live births for every 1,000 population, the lowest since vital statistics began to be produced nationally in 1921. The rate has dropped 25.4% in the last 10 years alone.

In total, 328,802 babies were born in 2002, down 1.5% from the previous year. It was the 11th decline in the past 12 years.
Birth/death rates are only a partial picture, we have immigration in this country you know.

                We're gaining population, period...

Guaranteed stable supply of oil and natural gas? Alberta's natural gas in particular supplies almost all of the western US.

Most of them going to Calgary...

Calgary is having a hard time keeping up with the population explosion over the past 5-6 years, and here you are telling me about how the economy is in collapse due to falling population...

It's not like we'd get it for free if they were a state.

It's not them leaving the US that would be the problem, but staying. If Alberta refuses to be a net funds contributor, the US gets nothing out of it. The point is one way or another either Alberta or the US or both would view union as disadvantageous.

I'm well aware of that. Newfoundland is declining even when immigration and interprovinicial migration are taken into account, and the other maritimes, and saskatchewan are close.

                        That's 5 provinces right there.

I was going to do a province by province analysis, and Alberta is unique in two ways. It has the highest interprovincial migration, and the highest fertility rate of any province. Ontario and BC have higher immigration rates, but they are counterbalanced by the other two factors.

                              • Manitoba, is an interesting case. It is gaining 8k a year, 7.5 of which is immigration.
