You guys seems to do not understand, that aside 1991 when Iraqis soldiers fought in Kuwait and fought there because of Saddam, currently they will fight on their own territory and will fight for their own country. Currently they will not fight for Saddam, they will fight against foreign agressors who invaded their country.

I do believe, however, that our forces will do immeasurably better in the Middle East than the *former* Soviet Union could have ever hoped to have done.

Oh please, how can you compare the Soviet campaign of 1979 to the Afghanistan campaign of 2001?
Weapons technology has moved forward now and America is in a considerably favorable position, with the Soviets gone and newer weapons developed.
Let's also look at the differences of both wars. The Soviets marched into Afghanistan and were shortly attacked by rebels from Pakistan; not just some martyrs with bayonets in hand, mind you, but trained operatives, not to mention the numbers of them. We also didn't have the caliber of weapons that are provided to the US in today's world.
For the US campaign, much has changed. The former "freedom fighters" no longer have operational weapons. What ever they do have that is operational is Soviet material dated back to the 70s. They don't have the training that the CIA gave them to counteract the Soviets and today, are mostly disorganized ruble and the number of them is lower than what the Soviets faced.
Now considering the loss ratio for both sides in the Soviet-Afghan war, I say we held out pretty good against them and their guerilla tactics.

But there is no reason to believe that, over time, Moscow will simply let the region slip from its grasp.

If we compare two wars wich lasted aproximately the same time- Soviet war in Afganistan and American in Vietnam, then we will see that Soviets lost 14 500 KIA, while Americans lost about 60 000 KIA.
