    • Ramo, it was an amendment to remove language from the constitution and at least one other amendment, not a straight repeal of an existing amendment. Just pointing that out as a technicality.

The problem with that amendment was a concerted effort by some to foster the belief that removing the language, which basically said education is not a right in Alabama, would open the door for court-mandated tax increases for school funding.

It's crap, and Roy Moore was one of the ones spearheading that argument, but it scared enough otherwise intelligent people, who simply didn't investigate the amendment much at all, into voting no just in case there was something to the argument. Another big chunk of no votes came from people who just don't trust our government (and with good reason) and figured there had to be some ulterior motive. Add in those that voted no on all amendments, and have vowed to do so until we're given a completely new constitution, and the only surprise is that it was close enough for a recount.

OTOH, we did pass an amendment that pissed away our property rights by allowinf eminent domain to legitimately include economic development projects.

Where did I 'have' people believe that?

And where did you get this wondrous ability of (inaccurate) long distance telepathy?

I gave a list of books that had been the target of various groups and quoted a law case. I also asked for proof that the Bible had been banned from schools- none seemed to have been forthcoming.

For the record- I am not against having the Bible in schools- I believe that the Authorized Version of 1611, itself in part a revision of the earlier Bishops' Bible is an outstanding piece of English literature, and vital for the proper understanding of the spread of literacy, the growth of English as a world language, and English politics of the Jacobean, Carolingian and Commonwealth periods.

But then that would be because I'm against censorship and bowdlerization and for the freedom of ideas.

But Alabama just wouldn't be Alabama unless somebody taught them to stone gays.

              • So which schools have banned the Bible or the Qu'ran or any other religious text, as opposed to having the teaching of the said text proscribed ?
I suggest you read my earlier post. Canadian elementary schools, Molly.

                • This seems to be a particularly weak argument as I would assume many university library collections WOULD have the bible. In fact, Universities that have a school of theology probably have a large number of bibles including different versions.
Which is why I concede that point.

I'm more interested as to what people think about the lower grades, as to what materials ought to be provided.

Well I read that one, and I read the other one where you said Canada won't have them in elementary schools, but where's the proof?

Couldn't you have provided some evidence for your assertion?

After all, you've shown yourself to be inaccurate in the past, even in regard to elements of your religion.

                    • First, we're talking elementary schools, not high-schools.

Second, the parents who choose a secular school do not want any religion involved in their education, which includes bibles (some argue they are religious books
Is this so? I thought most people went to public schools because that's what they pay for, to have their child educated.

Why should the child be withheld this book in a secular school, from perusing it if he or she desires? I'm not talking about teaching the bible, just about putting it in the library.

Asher doesn't contest what I've said. I know they had them in my secondary school, but not in the elementary library where I attended.

Granted, that was some time ago, but why would they make sure a Bible got put in there if it wasn't in there before?

The religious public school district DOES allow bibles, while the secular public school district does not...
                        EDIT, he CONFIRMS the point.

                          • It is my opinion that an official copy of the three most common versions of the religious texts of all major world religions should be kept in school libraries , in their free and completely uncensored form . There's enough perversity in those books to render almost everything else redundant . And techincally , even the Kama Sutra is a religious text , as Kama ( the act of love/sex ) is one of the moral imperatives of people existing on this earth ( the other three being to earn money , to attain enlightenment , and the last one I forgot ) .

I'd like to see the fundies swallow this ( I don't care if they swallow literally or metaphorically ) . If you want to keep the Bible ( which has Leviticus if we want to look for how to deal with some physical problems I'd rather not mention here ) , better keep the Ramayana , complete with the descriptions of the drunken orgies of a King with his few hundred wives in a garden built expressely for this purpose .

Any opinions on this , Christians of 'poly ?
