  • Alabama legislator proposes destroying, banning gay books

Gay book ban goal of state lawmaker
    Wednesday, December 01, 2004

    News staff writer

MONTGOMERY - An Alabama lawmaker who sought to ban gay marriages now wants to ban novels with gay characters from public libraries, including university libraries.

A bill by Rep. Gerald Allen, R-Cottondale, would prohibit the use of public funds for "the purchase of textbooks or library materials that recognize or promote homosexuality as an acceptable lifestyle." Allen said he filed the bill to protect children from the "homosexual agenda."

"Our culture, how we know it today, is under attack from every angle," Allen said in a press conference Tuesday.

Allen said that if his bill passes, novels with gay protagonists and college textbooks that suggest homosexuality is natural would have to be removed from library shelves and destroyed.

"I guess we dig a big hole and dump them in and bury them," he said.

A spokesman for the Montgomery-based Southern Poverty Law Center called the bill censorship.

"It sounds like Nazi book burning to me," said SPLC spokesman Mark Potok.

Allen pre-filed his bill in advance of the 2005 legislative session, which begins Feb. 1.

If the bill became law, public school textbooks could not present homosexuality as a genetic trait and public libraries couldn't offer books with gay or bisexual characters.

When asked about Tennessee Williams' southern classic "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof," Allen said the play probably couldn't be performed by university theater groups.

Allen said no state funds should be used to pay for materials that foster homosexuality. He said that would include nonfiction books that suggest homosexuality is acceptable and fiction novels with gay characters. While that would ban books like "Heather has Two Mommies," it could also include classic and popular novels with gay characters such as "The Color Purple," "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and "Brideshead Revisted."

The bill also would ban materials that recognize or promote a lifestyle or actions prohibited by the sodomy and sexual misconduct laws of Alabama. Allen said that meant books with heterosexual couples committing those acts likely would be banned, too.

His bill also would prohibit a teacher from handing out materials or bringing in a classroom speaker who suggested homosexuality was OK, he said.

Allen has sponsored legislation to make a gay marriage ban part of the Alabama Constitution, but it was not approved by the Legislature.

Ken Baker, a board member of Equality Alabama, a gay rights organization, said Allen was "attempting to become the George Wallace of homosexuality."

Aside from the moral debates, the bill could be problematic for library collections, said Jaunita Owes, director of the Montgomery City-County Library, which is a few blocks from the Alabama Capitol.

"Half the books in the library could end up being banned. It's all based on how one interprets the material," Owes said.

OH NO NOT THE HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA

And people wonder why the South is laughed at.

What is the homosexual agenda though?

"It sounds like Nazi book burning to me,"

No wait! It's US vs Netherlands today .

Anyway, wouldn't it be a better idea, I mean if there was a gay agenda, and they wanted to destroy it, wouldn't it be better to have it super public, to show everyone the evil agenda and then destroy it? See no evil doesn't make it go away. The agenda that is. The underground movement must be much more difficult to destroy.

The gay agenda is to turn everybody gay. I don't know why gays would want to do this, but nor do I know why straight people would want to turn everybody straight (even though this is clearly the agenda of some straight people), so, whatevah.

To turn everyone gay? Why would a straight man turn to gay? How can he start lusting after men instead of previously women? Makes no sense to me. If you start wanting men, hey breaking news, you were gay to begin with. Yet another bigot who has some sexuality issues. I bet he does it with dead horses.

To reduce or eliminate the persecution faced by homosexuals by using public schools (and private if possible) to teach acceptance of homosexuals as humans worthy of the same respect afforded heterosexuals. The conflict is created when parents who believe homosexuality is a behavioral choice that can be induced don't want the schools used for that kind of social engineering.

Sheesh. This reminds me of that SMAC quotation posted in some other thread, the one by Pravin Lal.

I don't care if you're born gay, or playing with Barbie causes you to become gay or that you drank some fairy juice that caused you to become gay - people have right to live the homosexual lifestyle if they wish to do so as well as heterosexual lifestyle.

People like that guy ought be banned but the problem is that if I was to do that I'd be stooping down to his level.

Actually, I myself almost turned gay after having watched the movie, "The Matrix Reloaded". The gay agenda is quite clear in that film, what with Neo and Trinity making hot gay love, the fetish for leather, and the obsession that Neo and Smith have for each other.

Luckily, I was rescued from being gay by the help of a friendly and strapping young man who had previously joined me for some soccer practice.

                      Banning other gay literature.

Get this, I don't know whether to laugh or shake my head in shame.

CBS, NBC ban church ad inviting gays
Networks wont run church spot featuring gay couple; say ad runs contrary to company policies.

                          December 1, 2004: 7:56 PM EST
By Steve Hargreaves, CNN/Money Staff Writer

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The CBS and NBC Networks have refused to run an ad by a liberal church promoting the acceptance of people regardless of sexual orientation because the networks believe the ad is advocacy advertising.

The 30-second spot, run by the United Church of Christ, features two muscle-bound bouncers standing outside a church, selecting people who could attend service and those who could not. Among those kept out are two males who appear to be a couple. Written text then appears saying, in part, "Jesus didn't turn people away, neither do we."

"Because this commercial touches on the exclusion of gay couples...and the fact that the executive branch has recently proposed a Constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, this spot is unacceptable for broadcast," the church quoted CBS as saying.

A CBS spokesman confirmed that the ad was banned, but would not comment directly about the above statement.

"It was against our policy of accepting advocacy advertising," said the spokesman.

An NBC spokeswoman said the problem with the ad was not its depiction of same sex couples at church, but its implication that other religions are not open to all people.

"It went against our long-standing policy of not accepting ads that deal with issues public controversy," said the NBC spokeswoman.

"It's ironic that after a political season awash in commercials based on fear and deception by both parties seen on all major networks, an ad with a message of welcome and inclusion would be deemed too controversial," said Rev. John Thomas in the statement.

"We find it disturbing that the networks in question seem to have no problem exploiting gay persons through mindless comedies or titillating dramas, but when it comes to a church's loving welcome of committed gay couples, that's where they draw the line."

NBC couldn't comment on the seeming contradiction by the networks who aired a slew of controversial political ads during this past election but now refuse to air the ad from the United Church of Christ.

The commercial can be viewed at www.stillspeaking.com.

The church says the ad has been accepted on a number of other networks, including ABC Family, BET Discovery, Fox, Hallmark, TBS and TNT.

TBS and TNT are owned by Time Warner (Research), which also owns CNN/Money.

CBS is part of Viacom (Research) while NBC belongs to General Electric (Research).

The Cleveland-based United Church of Christ claims 6,000 congregations with 1.3 million members.

Sheesh, they could have been friends or sisters. It was probably meant for them to be a lesbian couple, but fercrissakes there was nothing there!
