The question is using the power of the state to impose those value systems on the entirety of the country.
This isn't true. I think they would be happy to enact measures against abortion, fetal stem cell research funding, gay marriage, and gun control at the state level.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

And if they want to impose those issues in their states, and sod off in our states, I don't have a problem with that. Except for the Second Amendment, I don't see any Federal issue in that list.

Again, DanS makes my point for me.

If you are a soco in Cali, you are in a tough boat, with their current stem cell bill.

Plus, if the liberals don't legislate their social agenda, why do you have R v Wade?

If there was a broad political and judicial agreement that these aren't federal issues, the Dems would be able to be competitive again in the red states.

well let me elaborate then. Compared to some of those Dem Congressmen, most 1950s Republicans were raging lefties. In effect most of the congresses from 1948 to 1974 WERE dominated by Republican majorities, just that historic party loyalties in the South meant that this wasnt quite official. IOW the Hoover effect wasnt all that dramatic at the congressional level.

Hell. I have to admit that I'm burning at the neck. I didn't think I would care that much.

Really? I didn't know that the stem cell bill mandated anyone participate in stem cell research.... Funny, I did reat the text of the initiative and I missed that part.

Invalidation of restrictive legislation with the opportunity to restate the legislation in a different way != social legislation.

How many social conservatives have been compelled to have abortions, or to perform abortions, under Roe v. Wade?

We wanted to limit the power of the Federal government before, but ol' Abe would have none of that.

Uh, because the conservatives legislated theirs.

I pity the Americans. Stuck with that incompetent president for another four year, watching there economy go down the drain...(comparitively speaking, to what it could be).

My main source of nervousness is that if America gets hit by a nuke from terrorists, then Bush won't hold anything back in his zealousness.

And I hate hearing his malpropisms...
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

edit OK, maybe not that much. But nervous, certainly.
