Canada's homicide rate was similar to those in France, the U.K. and Australia. Japan and Scotland have the world's lowest homicide rates, with 0.51 murders per 100,000 and 0.64 per 100,000 respectively.

A couple of unrelated points
1. I have always seen the different murder rates in Canada versus the US as one indicator that there are real, but subtle, cultural differences between our two countries.
2. I have never seen a compelling argument that the death penalty accomplishes mush in the way of general deterrence. Most homocides are impulsive. That said , there are instances where it is not difficult to support the death penalty just on a desire for retribution. There can be no doubt that the executed offender has been specifically deterredYou don't get to 300 losses without being a pretty exceptional goaltender.-- Ben Kenobi speaking of Roberto Luongo

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

they're tough in australia... that's why they don't need guns.
Americans are pussies... they are all scared to death that black men will come in their house and rape their women. I think America's love affair with guns can be traced back to original anglo-saxon worries about having small shlongers.
but seriously, if only the police and military get to have guns, then they can't be stolen from people who legally purchase them. And ILLEGAL, STOLEN WEAPONS is what criminals get. Guns get stolen from stupid morons who buy guns legally. To us, it is the BEAST.

admit it - your country is f*ckedI came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I was just over in Europe and thought the same when I landed in the States on the return. I guess it's just a matter of familiarity.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. the church has maintained for years that capital punishment is just as morally questionable as abortion.
Capital Punishment, in Catholic Teaching, may be used as a means for the state to defend itself in certain cases. The Church leadership has said that such cases are very rare today, but that is open to dispute as whether a particular case meets the criteria is not a matter of faith and morals, where the Church has infalliblity.
Aboriton on the other hand is a direct murder which the Church teaches is always and nessecarily wrong. The moral principle in this case prohibits all abortion, so there is no case in which it is justifiable, and is therefore worse."I'm moving to the Left" - Lancer
