Democratic mayors in most big cities = sharp reduction in murder rates. See my post above: it's not that liberals cause crime, it's that cities have high crime rates and cities tend to be run by liberals.

"Toughness" didn't cut the murder rates, broad societal changes did. Shrinking of the violent adolescent age group, better economy, reduction of the crack epidemic. There's no reason to believe otherwise.

      Or Rudy, the ex-prosecutor.

The problem is in our big cities. That's where you get these whacked out murder figures. Rural and suburban America are pretty safe places. Front line enforcement is handled at the local level. Who holds the mayoralities in the big cities of Texas? Who is the mayor Detroit? Who holds the mayoralities of almost all big cities in the US? Democrats.

Just look at the city statistics of murder for 2001.

In Washington, D.C. -- where I live now -- there were 40 murders per 100,000 inhabitants. Run by democrats. In my home town in Ohio there were 0.00 murders per 100,000. Run by Republicans.
God, you are insane, aren't you? Who prosecutes the crime and controls the justice system? Oh, that the Governors. Learn your civics before you say something silly.

        • HA ha ha

IIRC LA has had an increase in gang violence-even with a republican mayor-and Chicago has also seen a significant drop in crime, while the likelyhood of a republican mayor there is between 0 and none.

Again, in terms of crime laws, that is a state issue.

Who said anything about the laws? Murder is illegal in every state in the union. But democratic political machines and mayors -- the people who have authority over city cops and can put a stop to this mess -- are the ones responsible for these horrid murder statistics.

I think you need to face the reality that the Democratic Party is little more than extension of organized crime in most big US cities.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

            • Now let me get this straight GePap... are you really trying to say that the Governor of Illinois runs Chicago

Yeah, they are in charge of the state laws, but the city has it laws as well... and, the city runs the police force.
And is in charge of the Prosecution Office. All the key things in the city are controled by Mayor Daly.

(Chicago has anti gun laws not enforced anywhere else in the state)

And many have questioned whether the drop in crime in Chicago has more to with the way the information is being reported vs reality

              • Chicago is more freedom-loving than Canada, though. Chicago shows compassion, and lets the murdered people vote.

This might be true if there were no examples of cities with Republican mayors and tough Republican prosecutors that did better on crime.

But there are. Check out New York City under Giuliani.

Chicago is sorely in need of a Republican mayor.

Something about a cold day in hell...

We won't be seeing a republican mayor in the city of Chicago in our life times, and neither will our children

                      • As the coach as shown, there is no way in hell he is going to let the press take a close look at his finacial records... And face it, the dead people and whinos would still vote democratic early and often

                          • How is there any kind of local democracy in a place when the tilt reaches such a degree that only one party can ever win under any conceivable circumstances?

Easy. A party tilts to a regional bias and it gets stuck. Or "birds of a feather flock together," and large numbers of like-minded people move to certain places.

For example, the people of Louisiana have not once in their history elected a Republican Senator (since Reconstruction). The Democratic Party was very well aligned with LA in the 1800s and through the mid 20th century, but less now (although still close).

Or the rise of the rich whitey suburbs.

Well anyway the city where Muddy Waters was laying down his great music can't be too bad of a place.
