It would further make the EU as a far more relevant and effective influence over the Muslim world, giving it infinitely more moral credit to inspire change there.

Frankly, I salute the American foresight here as opposed to parochial European proceduralism (must...resist...saying...racism...arrgh)
Turkey should become a state in USA then.

Many people wear their religious symbol on their necklace here. Be it a David's star, a crescent, or a cross. None of those are banned.

However, you can get asked to remove a part of your external clothing, if, say, it pictures a huge Christian cross.

        Skywalker:
It is embarassing, and definitely not convenient. This law was made to defend the dogma of a religionless school, and this dogma was established back when the Republic struggled against the Catholic religion. Our government has tried very hard to come up with something to ban for each religion.

I'm not sure why, but I find this very funny.

Let's hope the US does not want Pakistan or Saudi Arabia in the EU later too.

            2. It shows that the Euros who are so snooty about the backwards US, are discriminating against a country cause its moslem.
It shows nothing of this. There's no fundamental right to be in the EU.

              "How about overlarge crosses?"

"Okay, that works -- what about Jews?"

              "No Stars of David"

"What about yamakas -- no, Stars of David are fine. Muslims?"

              "Headscarves"

              "Okay...that works. Buddists?"

              "Um...no Saffron Robes?"

"I'm not sure that's Buddhists, and besides, that's just monks, I think."

It is contraproductive, and will only help radicalize many of our Muslims into rejecting French society.

That position is such a BAM. many of your muslims are ALREADY rejecting french society (and I mean that in the old "republican" way, not the "let's coexist, and you'll beat your wife while I drink wine" bull****)

I hope Turkey is eventually admited because I would rather see a secular western leaning Turkey then a religious Arab looking Turkey. It looks like a choice between those two options.
Well, Turkey can make a move towards religious - flavoured politics after it enters EU
But generally I agree, letting Turkey in can have some benefitial effects.
I'm just afraid that when it enters EU, it will never even think of checking if its claims about Armenian thing wasn't
wrong by a chance. And that it will block Armenian entrance.
Also, I was suprised to learn that my Turkish friend didn't know Ilias story until He watched this film with Brad Pitt.
I don't know how is it with Turkish education, but ancient Greece stuff should be obligatory in every European state

Organized religion is a crime. Individuals can think what they want.

By the way, why is US so obsessed by getting Turkey into EU? That is a matter of EU and no one else!
It is a way of showing how nice America is to Muslims without changing its politics towards Israel

Turkey is rather far away from the US. It does border one EU state though and a second state which will likely be in the EU soon.
