  • This thread seems to me to be less of a defense of blue collar culture than it is an attack on sophistication. Petty, vindictive attacks get you nowhere.

      Yes!

So what does it mean to be uncultured, and what does this say about the people who throw that around to try to be insulting?

      • I'm with Asher on this one. I am pretty well educated and have well refined tastes. However I am not 'arty'. Classical music/opera bores me senseless - there is no beat and nothing compelling about the music. I've been to recitals before...it is like when Jack Nicholson goes to one in 'The Witches Of Eastwick'

I like a good film, I can appreciate action and I can appreciate something more 'refined'. But pretentiousness I just cannot tolerate.

          • classical music is a real vague term as it includes everything from baroque to Gershwin...

i do got to say though that that sort of music got dramatically more listenable in the early 20th century with composers like Carl Orff and Gerswhin who took a traditionally melodic musical form into the 20th century, an era of rhythm and beat. jazzified classical music is very modern and listenable.

My partner's parents aren't the slightest bit 'arty', and both go to the opera, not because they think they should, or because it's morally uplifting, or they will join an elite, but because they like the music and the singing.

As for classical music having 'no beat'- which music do you mean? Would you say, taking a piece of music popularized in a film, that Ravel's 'Bolero' has no beat?

What about the theme to the 'Lone Ranger'? Is that also lacking a 'beat'?

Offenbach's 'Can Can'- no beat again?

All three are popular examples of 'classical' music that at least to my ear, have definite 'beats'.

What makes the music you like compelling for you?

              • Just because music places more emphasis on melody than on rhythm and beat doesn't make it automatically bad - it just makes it something not to YOUR taste. I personally prefer a heavier emphasis on melody than on rhythm and beat.

                • Being sophisticated involves understanding classic Western literature, art, and culture. What is coming out today is just entertainment for stupid people. Classical European culture is not entertainment. It is designed to educate people and make them think. Every time I see a Shakespeare play or read a Dickens novel, I feel more intelligent and enlightened.

Culture is a rare thing these days. People listen to nasty rap or rock music instead of classical. Stupid liberals say it's racist/snobbish/ignorant to enjoy the superior arts! They want to spread the lie that "every culture is equal" so the proles can be more easily pacified under their left-wing conspiracy.

These hippies want us to like modern art, which is garbage that doesn't make any sense, and "music" that has no respect to harmonies or melody. "Literature" like Harry Potter is polluting the minds of our children and stuff like anime poisons the culture of our people. We should get rid of this garbage before it's too late.

Real culture is dying. The sad thing is, crap like the Beatles, rap music, death metal, and electronic music might actually be considered classical someday. I think there should be more museums to keep alive European culture and heritage. Because someday, those museums might be the only place to find it.

Actually, if you actually read any of my posts you'd see I consistently said that art tastes & musical taste are all relative to a person, not that what I do is better than others.

It would help if you'd read threads before replying.

                          • You're not cultured, Glonkie. Just deal with it.
Actually, Glonkie's right on this. There are different 'cultures'.

Culture is simply a way of ordering one's life in collaboration with others, such that the group shares certain beliefs or ideals expressed by collaboration.
