A simple income tax system is more of a left wing idea. The people who would oppose it the most are corporate execs.

A lot of stuff that Hong Kong does should be avoided like the plague. There are no competition laws so cartels exist in most of the local industries. Our streets are jammed with tree-quarter empty buses because there are three bus companies, plus independent minibuses.

On the other hand, the simple tax system makes it easy for unemployed people to start their own companies. Just get a licence, buy some stock and rent store space. Most people do their own accounting books. Try doing that in Canada. As an NDPer, one of Canada's biggest problems is its high unemployment rates and people trapped in the poverty circle. They'd be better off if they could start their own business. It's not that simple, but reducing the barriers is better than raising them.

The people who live west of Ontario simply do not matter in Canadian politics right now because there aren't enough of them. Quebec and Ontario run things and the rest of you will just have to live with it for the time being.

Why don't you two just give up and enjoy the prosperity and tolerance the Liberals bring to Canada. Most people who open a small business do not become filthy rich.

The underlying belief of the NDP is to ensure all Canadians have a good lifestyle and to eliminate poverty. If helping people start a business helps achieve this goal then it should be done.
