I might if I was bored and had nothing better to do than bait Christians.

If you aren't prepared to accept a movie for what it is (in this case a religious picture), then why even bother talking about it?
Because its not billed as just a religious picture... its billed as a "historical" religious picture.

    • Yes... everything that I believe is true has been verified to me empirically.
Do you believe in the South Pole?

Well now you have your chance! I'm sure they are showing it or will be soon where you live. Please do us the favor of posting the results.

It's using the Gospels as its primary source. Either accept that you won't agree with it and move on or let it eat at you. However the last option would be more entertaining for me.

          • Some dude on the Newshour was saying that the movie makes a lot of stuff up outside of the accounts in the Gospels (for example, not potraying the power structure in the society properly).

            • I'm aware that there is a concept defined as a continent... I've perceived continents, from a height. I'm aware of books, with maps, and have seen maps with continents labelled. One of those continents was called Antarctica. I'm aware of the concept of magnetism. I've perceived experiments repeating other magnetic behaviors. I'm aware of the concept of the earths magnetic field, and that one of the fundamental concepts of that is that there is a central magnetic axis. I'm aware of a marking on the map defining that pole, which coincides where magnets point.

So... no... I don't believe in the south pole. I'm aware of it, and its surrounding concepts.

How is any different from what Boris said. If you are a non-believer, it is just some guy getting tortured for a few hours.

Many non-believers are prepared to accept the movie for what it is. C'mon Imran, this isn't rocket science...

No Drake. While I know it's your standard maneuver to try and put your own spin on people's explanations for their beliefs/actions to suit your particular notions, let me spell it out for you: I don't have any problem suspending such disbelief for a film that's about a story, such as The Last Temptation of Christ, The Greatest Story Ever Told, or even Jesus Christ Superstar. However, when the entire purpose, as stated by the director, is to send a religious message that Jesus died because YOU there in the audience are a sinner, then you've reached the limits of my interest. Suspending my disbelief has to be because of a compelling interest. Nothing about this film, so far as I've seen, has inspired such interest in me. I've read the book, didn't find it interesting, so why should I see the movie version? Two hours of watching something that doesn't interest me is two hours wasted.

I would take issue with your description of the movie as "only for believers", however. I'm not a believer. I would really like to see this movie, however, as do many of my non-believing friends. I think I can suspend my disbelief and accept the simple premise of the film in order to be able to understand what Gibson is trying to say. If you can't do that, fine, but don't try to paint all non-believers as being so narrow-minded.
It wasn't my description of the film, Drake. As I clearly stated--twice--it was the description of my colleagues who had seen the movie, at least one of which IS a believer, that I know of. Notice how I also explicitely stated that I hadn't seen the film and couldn't be sure? But you haven't seen it either, so I'm amused you're taking issue with something that may or may not be accurate!

I'm still not so sure why it's so wrong of me not to be interested in seeing this movie...

So how then did explorers discover the South Pole before Quantum Field Theory?
