I was under the impression that Santa Claus originated with Saint Nicholas, a christian religious leader. Also, some Christians believe Jesus was born on April 6.

Look, I'm aware of the pagan history behind Christian holidays -- but that is going out into another dimension that has NOTHING to do with my BASIC question.

That some morons have claimed that Jesus Christ was not born at all -- that he never existed as a person.

Persecution is characterized by discrimination. In this case, the christians are being discriminated against.
Non-Christians technically are being discriminated against because the schools have Christmas vacation. That doesn't mean they're actually persecuting non-Christians.

The connotation of the word "persecution" goes a bit past totally irrelevent acts that don't in the least hurt anyone.

I defy you to find ten of them that would turn it down.

'Course most Moslem students would probably rather have Ramadan-vacation.

That arguement has a double-edged blade.

Why should we stop the Christians from putting up Nativity scenes when they don't hurt anyone at all?

So until you start flogging Christians, it does not count as persecution?

What definition do you use Ramo?

Is having Christmas-break instead of Ramadan-break persecuting Moslems?

                              Berz:

You either have authority or you don't. Makes no sense to claim you have no authority, and then to go and tell me how it is.
Ben, you're not reading my posts, I've said twice now (this is the third time) that I don't know if the nativity scene is ahistorical or accurate. I wasn't there, got that?

                              Mr Fun -
Hey super genius -- I was not talking about the DATE that Jesus Christ was born. But if we Christians have chosen a date based on traditons and custom, there is no harm with that.
Hey super genius, where did I say there was harm in Christians picking a date of their choosing? Take a chill pill. The fact remains, Christmas was most likely NOT the birthdate of Jesus but based on paganism observances.

how can people claim that Jesus was never born at all -- it WAS an actual historic event, regardless of WHEN it happened.
The date and the reasons for that date are part of a "historical" event. If I said Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese on July 15, 1963 because the US was getting involved in Vietnam, pointing out I was wrong doesn't warrant insults.

Can you prove he existed? If you accept the paganism behind Christmas, how do you respond to the paganism behind virgin births, the dying and resurrected god, the 3 days between the death and resurrection and the Christmas observance falling 3 days after the sun standstill, the ascension to heaven, and the idea of the man/god, etc...?
