Carlson, ideally, should have simply said his number was unlisted, but then went on to provide a number at CNN where he could be contacted.

That didn't happen, obviously, but what FOX did was the epitome of S-T-U-P-I-D. Good grief. Don't ever give them nuclear weapons. They'd probably use 'em.

Carlson did apologize, according to the article.

Did Carlson make seem as if the Fox number he gave out was his home phone number? He pretended to give out his home phone number, and when someone does it for real everyone complains?

Well, hey, if my neighbor ever gives out my unlisted phone number to a telemarketer, I'll make sure the public finds out soon afterwards that his wife is "loose" with her morals. Vengeance shall be mine!

P.S. Oops. I was possessed by the demonic spirit of FOX there for a second. I humbly apologize.

this is where i draw the line:

the mistake was carlson, and carlson's alone.

if anything, he should have been the one to get hit by the blaze.

his wife was blameless; and for her to get the calls that she is purported to have received--for that, Fox ought to be ashamed. That is a heinous breach of protocol: don't bring family members into a tiff that is between you and your opponent.

You could say that FOX news was correcting a misstake that Carlson made.

There's a huge difference between giving out the number of a LISTED BUSINESS TELEPHONE NUMBER and an UNLISTED PERSONAL TELEPHONE NUMBER.

I'm not quite sure what you righties don't understand about that

It is not quite unlisted, since he agreed to give out his number on TV, but gave out the FOX number instead, know that they would be flooded with call by angry people.

I would not have done the same, but Carlson is not in the clear etheir.

I'm sure there could legal repercussions for giving out an unlisted phone number as well, at least if Carlson was paying his phone provider *not* to release it (there's more to an unlisted number than simply not appearing in a phone book — if you don't pay the company, anyone calling 411 can get your number, even if it's not in the phone book).

Of course, there's always the possibility that, out of professional courtesy, Carlson gave his number to FOX at some point in the past. If that's the case, I don't think he can pursue legal action against them. It ends up just being a shameful, humiliating experience for FOX ... but they seem to revel in that light, so it's probably no skin off their hides.

And btw, the CNN commentator was conservative.

I know, but if you'll note, he was defending a telemarketer's right.

                              To me, that seems karma.

However, FOX is a business, and supposedly a "fair and unbiased" organization. When you give a private citizen's number as a retort to a personal mistake, that crosses certain lines which create a bad business. If Carlson had given out the number of, say, Bill O'Reilly. But he did not: he gave a published business number. FOX showed how far into bad taste they are willing to go.

Carlson gave his home phone number?

I'll bet his wife was not happy with him.
