So, If I slam someone, I do it so that I don't use full power. And that's why I tend to go with clean shoots in the first place.

In the streets first of all I don't fight, but if I had to, I wouldn't slam anyone. It's just too dangerous. Just weighed myself and I'm 89 kilos, so picking up a guy and throwing him on his back or neck is .. I don't even want to think about it . I trained a piledriver after I saw Bob Sapp doing one, but only the technique because that's a sure neck braker and brain killer.

But I'd say slams in real fights could be VERY effective. Maybe too effective.
I thought to use them in (military) combat mostly, as they seem the fastest possible way to kill someone in close combat without a weapon. Of course I wouldn't hesitate to use it in a fight against an armed opponent in civilian life either, if it looked like my best option. I'd rather run though, unless I'm really insanely pi$$ed off for some reason.

Sure.. I kind of see that as a dirty move, even when it's not and is allowed in many rules. Well not if you slam someone to their backs, but when you start slamming them head first.. that's just nasty.. that is when person knows how to do them properly. Very dangerous. I never slam anyone even to their shoulder. Just on their back.

But don't get me wrong. I like the move a lot. It's a thing of beauty with strength and technique combined.. When the likes of Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson does them, I'm all cheering and in extacy, but at the same time I don't want to see the other guy injured. I've been slammed too, it's a breath taking experience

edit: Wait a minute.. so what do you do? I thought it was only me and David Floyd interested and doing the more free rules fighting.. ?

I was a wrestler in high school and was a judo man in college, and have somehow developed some Aikido style moves (but never studied it formally). I think I developed my fighting style when I was a kid living on Okinawa for the most part. We fought a lot there, and those local kids were tough. I didn't even know that I knew judo until I took a judo class in college. It was mostly stuff I had been using for years, and I picked it up pretty quickly. Six months later I had a brown belt and was on the team. I lost a lot (2/3) in tournaments, but most of my opponents were vastly more experienced than me. In the dojo I sparred mostly with black belts, or sometimes with brown belts who outweighed me, and that built up my confidence a lot.

I went into the army after college and got into a few fights there. They were always over in a flash, hip throw and strangle. The same combination I used throughout my childhood against stupid Americans that tried to box me. I took a very little Tang Su Do, but injured my knee (hyperextension) while practicing front kicks against a heavy bag, and gave it up permanently. I can still kick decently though, I guess from playing soccer. I kick low and hard almost exclusively to the legs, unless my opponent is down.

I'm retired due to age and injury from sparring, though I still enjoy watching fights / matches. I saw the Ultimate Fighting Championships about 5 years after I quit doing martial arts regularly and fell in love with it. I wish there was something like that when I was younger, it would have had an even bigger impact on me. As it was I felt somewhat vindicated in my claims that grappling (alone) was superior to striking (alone) when my friends and I argued about martial arts. I only knew that from my experience no one was ever able to land a blow upon me, and I was always able to throw them to the ground and strangle them. Gracie showed my friends just how effective that (and quite a few other things too) could be.

            Sikander, two thumbs up.

Yeah, you know kids today have good things they can start as the game is now more popular and you can start cross training effectively in pro hands. I fell in love with shootfighting after I saw some tapes of Ken Shamrock in Pancrace.. and later on UFC. I took the sport later though, as I was too young, and my mom didn't let me.
I guess that was good, to enter the sport little more mature.

So you had some problems in Okinawa? Let me guess, your dad was in the army and you lived there because of that. How come you got into fights with locals? Some local baddies, or where you looking for trouble?

Little older guys than me that didn't have the opportunity of popular cross training that much, I find that the ones that are wrestlers with their backrounds do usually good. And naturally they have picked up something for striking, and then mixing it up and learning as it goes.. keeping their focus on the ground game that is. So, it seems like you went the right road maybe unknowingly.

Pekka: That's really weird that you said that. I just saw a tape of myself in a fight, and I was the only one there kicking my own ass.

The movie I saw was Jurassic Park. Did you just watch Undercover Brother?

Actually my parents were missionaries when we lived on Okinawa, though almost all the other Americans we knew were military. My dad worked for a company that ran three radio stations that broadcast christian programming. One broadcast in English (my dad was a dj for this station), one in Japanese and one in Chinese. My dad was the engineer for all of these stations as well as doing the dj shift at the English language station.

As for the fighting, it was fairly serious and organized sometimes. One of my earlier memories was of carrying bricks up to the front lines of a fight between the guys on my street and the guys a block away. I was 3 years old and could only carry one brick at a time. Most of the guys in my group were 5-7. I was the mascot I suppose. When I was in first grade I took part in these rock fights personally, and had a big rock split in two over my head. If it hadn't have broken in two I'm sure that I would have fractured my skull. My friends wrought terrible revenge on the guy who hit me, (he ambushed me from a tree, with an unsportingly large rock) everyone pummelled him with rocks as hard as they could throw.

The one on one fighting usually occurred at school or when I'd ride through an Okinawan village on my bike. The boys of the village might come out and challenge me to a fight. I'd have to fight their toughest guy, and this guy was usually older than me. They fought fair though, and I was never seriously hurt, or stupid enough to seriously hurt someone else. We'd be friends afterward no matter who won the fight. The next time through I'd fight someone else. It was really pretty friendly in comparison to the rock wars described above.

It was. Both of my parents worked, and I would run away from my nanny almost every day to play with my friends. My friends were mostly half-Japanese / half-Americans whose fathers were in the military. A lot of their fathers were in Vietnam, or flying missions over Vietnam (I was on Okinawa from 1963-1969). Thus the fathers were gone and the boys ran wild. When I was three I had two concussions, two instances of stitches on my face (including having my lower eyelid torn almost off by a german shepard and a stick thrust through the skin on my chin) and about 40 stiches on my hand from broken glass. A lot of this happened to me because I was hanging around with boys who were so much older than me that I couldn't easily keep up with them or handle the dangerous situations that they got into.

Sikander, just 3 years old.. that's.. unique. I'd suppose that kids little older would wander off if parents are busy and get into trouble... but not 3 year olds! you're lucky to be here in one piece!
