Speaking as a journalist, my newspaper carried articles on all the material that was mentioned in Chegitz's quoted material. Y'know what? People still claim we didn't carry it, but, damn it all, it's right there on the pages.

Read! Read! Read! Read! Don't just assume! (That's what I'd like to scream at half the complainers who waltz into our offices, but don't due to decorum.)

What it comes down to is this: Some folks are going to be stupid and ignorant, some willfully so, no matter how much information they have readily available to them. There isn't an iota we journalists or anyone else can do about it, either.

Oh, spotter balloons! I know those, but "artillery balloons" conjured an image of a really ineffective weapon that got sent flying back by the recoil.

I know you didn't think this was one issue only.
        Surely not.
Yes, you have to bring up the oil again.

Can't texans ever stop thinking about oil?

Do you think even the right wing Fox news goes around telling the U.S. that the hijackers were Iraqis?
Nah, I doubt it's that bad, but they are spreading the false "Saving Private Lynch" story. Just in case you didn't know:

One of Bush's advisors and key lobbyists to the British government, Irwin Stelzer, is a close consultant to Rupert Murdoch. John Ellis, a first cousin of Dubya and Jeb, was an election consultant for FOX News. He was responsible for Fox's declaration that Bush was the winner on November 7th, 2000. Also, Roger E. Ailes, a former Bush Sr. media coach, is the chairman of Fox News. He's also a close friend of top Bush advisor Karl Rove. Tony Snow, another Fox talking head, is a former Bush Sr. speechwriter. Jim Pinkerton, who also works for Fox, is a former Reagan and Bush Sr. staffer... and with all this, I'm sure there's more I don't know about.

The Bush admin has key contacts in the Fox family. For FOX viewers: You really should learn who's writing your news.

                    Which question?
“Now we declare… that the law-making power or the first and real effective source of law is the people or the body of citizens or the prevailing part of the people according to its election or its will expressed in general convention by vote, commanding or deciding that something be done or omitted in regard to human civil acts under penalty or temporal punishment….” (Marsilius of Padua, „Defensor Pacis“, AD 1324)

I think this thread has proven its point in that several staunch conservatives who has roasted the media are now actually defending it with phrases like "don't blame the media."

Why is the media to blame for people assuming things they never reported?

Because they did report it. They reported faithfully the Prez's assertion that Iraq was linked to al-Qaeda without questioning it. They reported faithfully everytime possible WMDs were found with much more attention than when it would, inevitable, turn out yet again to be false. Then it would merely be a one line comment. Emphasis is important.

It isn't just what you say, it's how you say it. Otherwise, Madison Ave would just be a street.

I've seen numerous stories stating that hasn't been proven.

PS Even Fox News says no WMD has been found in Iraq.

                              1. They omit key facts
                              2. When they report false information, nobody sees the retraction
                              3. They report stories before they are confirmed in order to "get the scoop"
                              4. Media Conglomerates have agendas
                              5. It isn't about truth, it's about ratings and commercial time

The media is the biggest contributor to the information the public is exposed to. When the information is wrong, they must shoulder blame. Sure, there are other factors, but they are not as significant.
To us, it is the BEAST.

Well they don't say "Iraqi links to Al Qaeda proven", it's a bit more subtle. Usual reporting goes like this:

"Government says Iraq has links to Al Qaeda"
"Government says Iraq has links to Al Qaeda"

"Some doubt government claims on Iraqi links to Al Qaeda"

And then you wonder why the casual observer believes that Iraq had links to Al Qaeda.
