I would propose a compulsory reload and try again - I, for one, save every turn in a Succession Game

    • They request Engineering --but why would they need that when they're researching Gunpowder?

You are right about the Tech tree-

Gunpowder requires Iron Working and Invention.

      Invention requires Engineering and Literacy.

One explanation for the inexplicable demand for Engineering is that they received Invention as a techgift, activating Gunpowder but not Engineering.

As for a compulsory reload, from what point do we need to re-start? Who plays, me or Jrabbit?

Just don't break ceasefires. Keep your word. How hard can that be?

        Reputation must remain Spotless throughout
if that happens, to me that is the same as getting a 2nd city in OCC from a hut - something that is outside the bounds of the game - we stop and reload from the most recent save where we haven't gone out of bounds.

          Nonono.

Our Spotless rep is intact. I was just asking how such an eventuality might be handled.

But I thought that if one got an advanced tech (say by trading or theft), the result was that further advances on that limb of the tree are not offered until the player has backfilled the missing techs.

Or is this another AI cheat technique?

            • As far as I know the selections are not consciously geared to making the player backfill the tech tree. If all the techs that used it as a preq have been gained it will be offered just as the various dead-end techs are offered.

I think that some of my OCCs I've managed to stave off an early required tech. But usually you wind up with the choice between some dead end you don't want and the bypassed tech. You might as well choose the bypassed one.

                  _Jrabbit,

Human players can do this as well. It's part of the established practice in, for instance, Early Landing Games. If you can trade with the AI for Engineering--even if you don't have Horse or the Wheel- then you too may be offered Invention as your next research, assuming you have Literacy. Skipping uneeded tech keeps the beaker cost down.

Later, you will have to go back for Horse, unless the AI obliges by learning Chivalry for you. It is possible to reach AC without having to acquire Wheel, although, I expect that would be rather rere.

                  • Nope -Jrabbit you have this wrong - once you have a tech there is no need to backfill - thank the Lord...
